A much-branched climbing shrub, 1.8 m high, with sharp recurved, short, compressed spines. Leaves deltoid or triangular, irregularly lobed or sinuate, ovate or elliptic; flowers pretty, purple-blue or violet-purple in extra-axillary racemose cymes; berries globose, red or scarlet; seeds smooth or slightly pitted.
Bronchitis (plant); cough (flower and fruit); indigestion, spermatorrhoea and fatigue (leaves); in rheumatism and constipation (Dried and powdered fruit); If used as ear drops the leaf juices cures otorrhoea.
