A small to moderate-sized, deciduous tree, sometimes reaching a height up to 24 m and a girth up to 3 m, with silky pubescent shoots. Bark greyish brown or blackish with rough vertical fissures; flowers in lax-flowered male and female catkins, more or less pendulous; capsules 7 mm long, glabrous; seeds grey-blackish brown, 4-6 in a capsule.
