An erect deciduous shrub, 1.5-3 m high. Stems up to 5 cm in diam.; bark of young stem pink or reddish brown; twigs glabrous; flowers pink to deep red, 2.5-7.5 cm. across, usually solitary; fruit red, ovoid or globose, 1.25-3.5 cm long.
It is being investigated as a food that is capable of reducing the incidence of cancer and also as a means of halting or reversing the growth of cancers.It is also used as an antispasmodic agent.
