A thorny shrub, up to 3.5 m. in height. Leaves elliptic or lanceolate, up to 12.5 cm. long; flowers yellowish white, in axillary racemes; drupe oblique, ellipsoid, 1.3-1.8 cm. x 1.0 cm., deep-purple to almost black, fleshy; putamen (stone) ellipsoid, smooth, enclosing a single brown seed, having thick oily cotyledons.
In rheumatism, to the forehead and temples in the treatment of coughs and colds, pains resulting from over-fatigue (oil). A paste of this seedcake is used as a poultice to treat ringworm or eczema.
