Herbaceous perennials, 6-18 in. leaves cloak shaped and pleated. Flowers very small, greenish-yellow, in clusters, with 4-lobed epicalyx, 4 sepals, no petals, 4-5 stamens.

Astringent, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, emmenagogue, vulnerary.
