A climber with smooth stem and branches. Leaves lanceolate to lanceolate-elliptical or narrowly ovate, up to 18 cm long, petiole up to 3 cm long, wings of petiolar sheaths weakly developed, tendrils up to 15 cm long. Umbels solitary. Fruit 5-8 mm in diameter, blue-black at maturity.

Used in the treatment of abscesses, boils, cystitis and diarrhoea (aerial tubers); in the treatment of cancer, mercury poisoning, acute bacterial dysentery, rheumatoid arthritis and syphilis (rhizome); in psoriasis, rheumatism and inflammations (decoction of rhizomes).
