A hairy, rough perennial, whose flowers, at first white, finally become yellow. The root, which is conical, and has a deep-red bark which is black on the outer surface, is used as a substitute for alkanna in coloring. The leaves are more or less evergreen, white bristly sage-green and lanceolate. Each leaf is held in a rosette on rigid stems, the centres of each rosette bearing the flower spikes. Flowers are borne on dense spikes rising from the larger stems, each is tubular, around one inch long and bright yellow. |
