An erect herb, 1.2-1.8 m. Leaves ovate or ovate-lanceolate emitting tobacco-like odour on bruising; flowers solitary, axillary, yellow- or greenish purple, pendulous; fruit a capsule.

Lowers blood pressure (root) and similar to those of belladona (Atropa belladonna)

Scopoletin (a flavonoid) and various alkaloids (root); hyoscyamine, himaline, atropine and scopolamine (leaves and stems)

Pupil dilation (leaf tincture); asthma, colic and hyperacidity.
