A very large erect grass growing in clumps, with flowering clums up to 6 m tall. Culms biennial, pale, solid, pithy, smooth, with an inconspicuous growth ring and root zone; leaves 1-2 m long and up tO 3 cm broad, glaucouse green, rough on the margins, with dense hairs close to the ligule; leaf sheath glabrous, smooth; panicle 30-90 cm long, pale cream to dark reddish purple; spikelets in pairs, one sessile and the other pedicelled, awnless.
