An erect hairy perennial, 60-150 cm tall, arising from a creeping rootstock. Leaves 15-30 cm long, lower ones narrowly oblanceolate or runcinatepinnatifid, middle and upper cauline leaves lanceolate, with spinous dentate margins; flower heads yellow, few, arranged in umbelliform corymbs; achenes scarcely compressed, longitudinally ribbed and transversely rugose, dark brown.
