Description |

An erect perennial strong-scented plant growing to 0.8m. Leaves serrate pointed, large, ovate and petiolate. Flowers yellowish; held in a terminal and leafless panicled raceme. Calyx ten-striate, upper lip truncate and three-toothed, lower lip two-cleft; corolla exserted, ringent; stamens two, long exserted. |

A tea made from the roots is strongly diuretic, it is valuable in the treatment of all complaints of the urinary system and the rectum and is used in the treatment of piles, hematochezia, indigestion, diarrhoea, kidney stones, bladder stones, dropsy etc. It has proved of benefit in the treatment of constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, mucous colitis and varicose veins. A poultice of the leaves or roots is applied to burns, bruises, sores, sprains etc. It is also indicated in laryngosis, rheumatism, telangiectasia, stomatosis, dyspepsia and enterosis. |
