Description |

A tall, robust, erect, branched, perennial cane-like grass, up to 8 m in height and 1-4 cm in diam. Rhizomes almost bulbous, creeping, thick, forming knotty masses; culms hollow, with walls 2-7 mm thick, multi-noded, internodes varying in length from 12 to 30 cm, outer tissue siliceous, very hard, brittle, with a smooth glossy surface that turns pale golden yellow when mature; leaves conspicuously 2-ranked, linear-lanceolate, with persistent leafsheaths; panicles, 30-60 cm long, erect, plume-like, silky hairy, cream-coloured or brown, spikelets 8-15 cm long, 2-7 flowered; fruits oblong. |
