A perennial vine. Leaves are stipulate, nearly always alternate, and range from bipinnately or palmately compound to simple. Flowers occur in clusters, greenish in colour. Fruit is usually a legume. Seeds big and black-red colored, up to 5mm in diam; often have a hard coat with hourglass-shaped cells
