Plant 3–5 dm, glabrous or puberulent, ± gland-dotted. Leaves: basal blades 10–20 cm, oblong-oblanceolate. Inflorescence: peduncle 3–8 cm; involucre 15–30 mm diam, bell-shaped; phyllaries ± equal, 15–30 mm, lanceolate to ovate, barely leaf-like, margins puberulent; chaff scales 15–17 mm. Ray flowers 5–10; ligule 20–30 mm. Disk flowers: corollas 10–11 mm. Fruit 8–10 mm, glabrous or tip puberulent; pappus scales < 1 mm, obtuse.
A decoction of the roots has been used in the treatment of stomach aches. Externally, it can be used as a wash in the treatment of headaches and as a wash for inflamed and sore eyes. A poultice of the baked roots has been applied to rheumatic joints. A poultice of the dried powdered roots has been applied to burns and running sores.
