Description
A perennial plant growing 15-70 cm. Leaves dark green, heart-shaped with a short leaf-stalk. Flowers are yellowish with a brown throat, and emerge from the leaves axil. Fruit is bladder-like and contains a single seed.
Herb Effects
Antitussive, diuretic, emmenagogue, pectoral, vermifuge and vulnerary (roots).
The plant stimulates white blood cell activity and speeding the healing of wounds, is also carcinogenic and damaging to the kidneys. Externally the plant is used to treat a variety of skin complaints including eczema and difficult to heal ulcers. The roots are used externally in treating itch and lice.
