An erect perennial plant, 1'-3' tall shrub, colony forming, with many branches. Leaves deciduous, with glands on both side. Inflorescence a cluster (raceme) usually shorter than the leaves. Flower pink, 5-parted, 1/4" wide, tubular shape, stalked. Fruit a black berry, fleshy, with 10 seeds.
An infusion of the leaves, or the bark, has been used in the treatment of dysentery. An infusion of the leaves has been used in the treatment of Bright's disease.
