Description
A sturdy climber or a medium sized tree. Leaves are large ornamental leathery. Flowers are large, 4-5" wide, vermilion-red to purplish, turn yellow towards daisy-like center, solitary or in 2—3-flowered cymes. Fruit composed of distinct carpels (fruitlets); fruitlet berry-like, cylindrical, 4—5.5 cm long, orange and fleshy, slightly constricted between the brown seeds.
Leaves and roots are applied in traditional medicine against stomachache, abdominal pains, waist pains and skin diseases. It is also used against coughs and flatulence.
