A small rhizomatous shrub, up to 2 m tall. Leaves opposite, oblong-lanceolate, 8-13 cm long, usually trilobed, serrate, glossy green; petiole 0.5-1 cm long. Inflorescence a head, numerous fragrant flower heads arranged into a terminal corymb; involucral bracts 7-8 mm long; corolla 4-6 mm long, purplish; pappus 5-6 mm long. Fruit an achene, about 3 mm long.
