An annual plant can grow up to 1 meter tall, with inflorescence in the ears and purple grain. The flowers grow in a terminal spike consisting of 5- to 7-flowered spikelets, each of which is embraced along almost its full length by a bract. The seed is small, yellow-brown to orange-brown, ovate, and somewhat compressed.
