A herbaceous biennial plant, usually not larger than 2 metres, although specimens of 2.5 have been known. The large pinnate leaves (up to 60 cm long) can be variable, but often have 5 broad, lobed and toothed segments. The stem are ribbed, hairy and hollow inside. The umbels are up to 15 cm across with 12-25 small white, greenish white or pink flowers. The fruits are 0.7-1 cm, flattened and broadly winged.
