A perennial which can reach 46cm in height. The stem is usually hairy. The plant has a bulb like base that is not a true bulb. The leaves are alternate, each leaf is divided. The flowers are yellow and have 5 regular parts and are up to 2.5cm wide. The sepals are bent down aganist the flower stalk.
As a painkiller for tooth ache (root); applied externally to the joints for gout and when applied to the nostrils, provokes sneezing and cures certain cases of headache (root juice); used as a mouth wash for mouth sores (infusion of roots); used to produce blisters on the wrists in rheumatism, and when infused in boiling water, as a poultice, at the pit of the stomach (leaves); in the treatment of VD (plant decoction). A tincture made with spirits of wine will cure shingles, preceded or followed by intercostal neuralgia and sciatica.
