A big evergreen tree that grows to a height of 45m with a girth of 2.4m. Bole is straight and buttressed, the buttresses are up to 5m. Bark is pale pinkish-brown, smooth, and lenticelled. Inner bark is pink. Stems are fissured longitudinally, rough, gray–brown, and lenticelled. Leaves are trifoliolate and hairy, and arranged in terminal spirals which are up to 40cm long. Petiole is 10cm long and somewhat flat at the apex. Petiolules are 5mm long. Rachis is 15cm long and supports three folioles which are 14.6cm × 8–6cm × 8–14.8cm × 11cm and show 10–12 pairs of secondary nerves sunken above. Midrib is broad, flat, and conspicuous above. Flowers are fragrant and in axillary panicles which are 15cm long and drooping. Calyx is truncate and frog-green. Corolla comprises five petals which are yellowish and free. Staminal tube is whitish, cylindrical, ribbed above, and tipped with 10 short
appendages. Androecium comprises 10 anthers. Ovary is 4–5-lobed as well as the stigma. Fruits are 3.7cm × 3.6cm, rough, velvety, yellow–red, edible, and with laticiferous drupes. |

Medicinal Use |

Used to treat intestinal disorders, colic, dysentery and leukorrhea and to promote digestion (roots); used externally to promote sweating and as a bath to reduce fever(leaves); applied externally to ringworms (paste of the bark); used as a drink to reduce fever and as a poultice to itching (leaves); to stop diarrhea (decoction of the leaves). |
