Description

Perennial bulb, 12 inches to 18 inches tall (30 cm-45 cm), 9 inches to 12 inches in spread. Leaves in fans on branching stems; flowers 6-parted, yellow to orange-red, spotted with maroon or purple; fruit a black berry.

Pharmacology

Medicinal Use

Effective against a number of bacterial, fungal and viral organisms and has also been used as an antidote to snakebites (herb); in the treatment of acute laryngitis, acute tonsillitis, oedema of the glottis, cough with profuse sputum, liver complaints (root)

Contraindication

Contraindicated in pregnancy; contains toxic iridoids belamcandin and iridin.
