Acacia senegal

Inhibiting bleeding, inflammation of the intestinal area, as an emollient, in cough, burns, sore throat and as a vehicle for other medicines (for example. suspending insoluble powders) (gum); bark, leaves and gum are used to treat gastritic disorders,, haemorrhage, ophtalmia, colds, diarrhoea, gonorrhea, leprosy, typhoid, urinary tract infections and as emollient, antitussive and astringent ; the gum is considered an aphrodisiac. The flowers are relished by honeybees.

Acer pensylvanicum

In the treatment of colds, coughs, bronchitis, kidney infections, gonorrhoea and the spitting of blood (bark)

Aconitum carmichaelii

In the treatment of shock and collapse, chronic diseases with symptoms of cold, gastralgia and rheumatic arthralgia, oedema and diarrhoea due to hypofunction of the spleen and kidney (root).

Aconogonon alpinum

Actaea alba

Actaea rubra

In the treatment of stomach pains, coughs, colds, menstrual irregularities, post partum pains, to increase milk flow and as a purgative after childbirth (root)

Adiantum capillus-veneris

To calm coughs, to promote perspiration and menstruation, and to treat urinary disorders, colds, rheumatism, heartburn, gallstones, alopecia (hair loss), and sour stomach (plant); applied to the forehead to relieve headaches and to the chest to relieve chest pains (frond paste)

Agastache foeniculum

In the treatment of colds, fevers, weak heart, abdominal pain and gastrointestinal tract spasms (leaf infusion); to treat burns (leaves and stem)

Ageratum conyzoides

Stops bleeding from cuts (leaf juice); as an antilithic (root), styptic (leaves),to treat cuts, wounds and bruises (plant juice); to treat scabies, rheumatism, coughs and colds (flower heads).

Angelica anomala

Angelica atropurpurea

In the treatment of colds, rheumatism etc (leaves); in the treatment of fevers, colds, flatulent colic and other stomach disorders, obstructed menses and as a general tonic for women, as a gargle for sore throats and mouths and as a poultice for broken bones, swellings etc (infusion)

Angelica glauca

In the treatment of dyspepsia and constipation, for asthma, bronchitis, anaemia, coughs, indigestion, arthritis and colds (plant); for cancer (root).

Anisochilus carnosus

As an expectorant (oil from plant) and in headaches (leaf); used to relieve urticaria associated with liver disorders and other allergic manifestations, for cough and cold (fresh leaves juice).

Anthemis cotula

To induce menstruation and was traditionally used to treat supposedly hysterical conditions related to the uterus, as a poultice on piles or to draw splinters out of the body, and can also be applied to the bath water (herb); rheumatism, epilepsy, asthma, colds and fevers (infusion); onto insect stings (leaves)

Aralia cordata

To treat the common cold and migraines

Arctostaphylos manzanita

To sores and headaches, severe colds and diarrhoea, for stomach ache and cramps (leaves); stomach complaints and as an appetizer to create appetite (fruit)

Armoracia rusticana

In the treatment of colds, fevers and flu and is of value in the treatment of respiratory and urinary tract infections; to treat pleurisy, arthritis and infected wounds (root)

Artemisia tridentata

Backhousia citriodora

Effective against common cold, influenza, bronchitis, chest congestion, indigestion and herpes simplex infections (essential oil); made as a tea for coughs, colds and other respiratory ailments, sinus and stress (plant)

Balanites aegyptiaca

In rheumatism (seed oil); stomach problems and as an expectorant (seed); useful in burns, wounds and ulcers, common cold, whooping cough, leucoderma, malaria, sleeping sickness and other skin diseases.

Balsamorhiza hookeri

For stomach problems, bladder difficulties, menstrual irregularities and other female complaints (root); used in the treatment of stomach pains and colds and as a steam bath for treating headaches (decoction of the leaves, roots and stems)

Balsamorhiza sagittata

For stomach pains, colds, whooping cough, TB, fevers and headaches (leaves, root and stem); to treat sore mouths and throats, toothaches, for body aches such as rheumatism, on wounds, blisters, bites, swellings and sores (root); for dysentery (seeds)

Barosma betulina

For kidney and bladder infections, cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis, gravel, inflammation and catarrh of the bladder, painful and burning urination, dysuria, colds and flu, stomach aches, fluid retention, heartburn, inflammation of the colon, rheumatism and inflammation of the gums.

Blighia sapida

To alleviate headaches, to the skin to heal ulcers, in ophthalmia and conjunctivitis (leaves); for epilepsy, yellow fever, breast cancer, cold, testicle cancer, small pox, tumour and vomiting.

Brassica juncea

Folk remedy for arthritis, foot ache, lumbago, and rheumatism. Tumours, abscesses, colds, lumbago, rheumatism, and stomach disorders (seed); skin eruptions and ulcers (mustard oil); for headache (leaves).

Calluna vulgaris

For treating rheumatism and arthritis, whilst a hot poultice is a traditional remedy for chilblains, for rheumatism, arthritis and gout (plant); in the treatment of coughs, colds, bladder and kidney disorders, cystitis etc (flowering shoot)

Calotropis procera

Dysentery, diarrhea, indigestion, reducing fever, leprosy, skin diseases and eczema (root bark); cough, cold and asthma (flower and root bark); toothache (latex); rheumatism and syphilis; to relieve stomach pain (leaves); cures piles, asthma, cholera and wounds (flowers).

Careya arborea

Snakebite antidote (fruit and bark), in treating body pain, fever, cold, cough, and leucoderma. The plant parts are used to treat snakebite, ulcers, healing wound, cough, cold, abscesses and dysentery.

Casearia sylvestris

For diarrhea, chest colds and flu (bark); to treat wounds and leprosy (roots or seeds);for skin diseases, to treat rheumatism, syphilis, herpes, stomach and skin ulcers, edema, fevers of all kinds, diarrhea, a topical pain-reliever and as an anti-ulcer drug (plant)

Centipeda minima

As a vermifuge and in paralysis (plant and seed); head colds (leaf and seed powder); for rhinitis, sinusitis, nasopharyngeal tumour, asthma and cold (herb)

Chimaphila maculata

In the treatment of rheumatism and colds, on ulcers, scrofula and cancers (plant); to treat pain (root)

Citrus aurantifolia

In indigestion and as an anthelmintic (fruit juice). Both the leaves and the flowers are antispasmodic, digestive and sedative, in the treatment of stomach problems, sluggish digestion, dyspepsia, constipation, abdominal distension, stuffy sensation in the chest, prolapse of the uterus, rectum and stomach. The seed and the pericarp are used in the treatment of anorexia, chest pains, colds, coughs etc.

Clerodendron phlomidis

In cough and cold and externally for dropsy (plant extract); to treat gonorrhea and syphilis (leaves juice); in digestive disorders like indigestion and constipation (bark).

Cocos nucifera

In diseases of the uterus, cooling and diuretic (Immature fruit); in debility, incipient phthisis and cachetic affections (fresh milk); for a wide range of physical disorders including asthma, cold, constipation, dysentery, earache, erysipelas, fever, flu, gingivitis, gonorrhea, jaundice, rash, scabies, syphilis, toothache, tuberculosis etc.

Cuminum cyminum

As a remedy for colic and dyspeptic headache, as a cure for stitches and pains in the side caused by the sluggish congestion of indolent parts. It is bruised and applied externally in the form of a plaster for wounds. Used in the treatment of insomnia, bloating, cough, diarrhea, indigestion, morning sickness, colds and fevers and to improve milk production in nursing mothers and also as a general tonic to the whole digestive system, it is used in the treatment of flatulence and bloating, reducing intestinal gas and relaxing the gut as a whole (seeds); Ground into a powder and mixed into a paste with onion juice, it has been applied to scorpion stings.

Cymbopogon nardus

Increasing the secretion of gastric juices (leaf); As emmenagogue, helps with gastro-intestinal distress including stomach ache and colitis, intestinal parasites, rheumatism, arthritis pain, cold and flu (Essential plant oil)

Cymbopogon schoenanthus

For fevers, colds and gonorrhoea; in rheumatism and neuralgia (oil)

Elsholtzia ciliata

To relieve the effects of excess alcohol, in the treatment of common colds, fevers, headaches, diarrhoea, oedema and oliguria.

Ephedra sinica

In the treatment of asthma, hay fever and allergic complaints; in the treatment of night sweating and spontaneous sweating (root); to treat asthma, allergic rhinitis, catarrh, upper respiratory infections such as pharyngitis, sinusitis and laryngitis, colds, influenza and as a general stimulant (dried aerial parts)

Eucalyptus globulus

In rheumatism, asthma, spasmodic throat troubles, increases cardiac action, chronic bronchitis, skin diseases and for burns (essential oil of leaf and aerial part); in sporadic fevers (alcohol extract of bark and leaf); alleviating spasms (leaf); for relieving coughs and colds, sore throats and other infections (leaves essential oil); in the treatment of diarrhoea and bladder inflammation, externally it is applied to cuts etc (resin); in the form of a tincture in asthma and chronic bronchitis (dried leaves).

Forsythia suspensa

To treat boils, carbuncles, urinary tract infections, allergic rashes, mumps and infected neck glands (herb); in the treatment of breast cancer (decoction of the leaves and twigs); cancer, colds, fever and jaundice (root); poulticed onto ulcerated glands and haemorrhoids (leaves); used internally in the treatment of acute infectious diseases such as mumps, and also for tonsillitis, urinary tract infections and allergic rashes (fruit).

Glycine max

In the treatment of colds, fevers and headaches, insomnia, irritability and a stuffy sensation in the chest; to snakebite (bruised leaf); blindness and opacity of the cornea (flowers); oedema, dysuria, chest fullness, decreased perspiration, the initial stages of flu and arthralgia (sprouts)

Helianthus annuus

Employed in the treatment of bronchial, laryngeal and pulmonary affections, coughs and colds, also in whooping cough. The crushed leaves are used as a poultice on sores, swellings, snakebites and spider bites. A tea made from the flowers is used in the treatment of malaria and lung ailments. A decoction of the roots has been used as a warm wash on rheumatic aches and pains.

Hyssopus officinalis

In the treatment of flatulence, stomach-aches, upper respiratory tract infections, coughs in children etc (tea from leaves); in gargles for quinsy and ordinary sore throat.

Imperata cylindrica

As a fumigant for piles (rhizome); for diarrhoea, dysentery and gonorrhoea (decoction of rootstocks); to stop bleeding (seeds); for cancer, colds, diarrhea, dysentery gonorrhea, myalgia, night sweats, piles, rheumatism, and tumors (plant)

Kalanchoe pinnata

Boils, wounds, swellings and insect bites. For all types of pain and inflammation. For earaches (leaf juice dropped into ear); for upper respiratory infections, flu, and fever.

Leucas aspera

Colds (flower); as a toothbrush (twig); as an insecticidal (plant); for psoriasis and chronic skin eruptions (leaf juice); in chronic rheumatism (leaves); for cough and colds in children (flowers with honey). In headache, juice of the root is put into the nostril.

Leucas cephalotes

Scabies (fresh plant juice); for urinary complaints, to boils (plant); colds and cough (flower); to cure skin problems (leaf juice); to treat nosebleeds (dried inflorescence)

Lonicera japonica

In dysentery, chronic psoriasis, to reduce blood pressure (plant); acute rheumatoid arthritis, mumps and hepatitis (stems); upper respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia) and dysentery (stem and flowers together); syphilitic skin diseases and tumors, bacterial dysentery, colds, enteritis, pain, swellings etc (flower buds)

Mesua ferrea

To treat diarrhoea with blood, hiccough, leucorrhoea for conception and bleeding piles (stamens and flowers), the leaves are applied to the head in the form of a poultice for severe colds, for sores, scabies, wounds, and rheumatism (seed oil), antidote for snake poison (roots), for bleeding hemorrhoids and dysentery with mucus (dried flowers), are also prescribed for excessive thirst, excessive perspiration, cough, and for indigestion (fresh flowers).

Mikania glomerata

Cough, bronchitis, throat inflammation, pleurisy, colds, flu, asthma, sore throats, laryngitis, and fever (Leaves); Neuralgia, rheumatic pain, eczema, pruritus and wounds (decoction of the leaves).

Morus nigra

In the treatment of colds, influenza, eye infections and nosebleeds (leaves); to relieve toothache (barks tincture); for urinary incontinence, tinnitus, premature greying of the hair and constipation in the elderly (fruit); asthma, coughs, bronchitis, oedema, hypertension and diabetes (root bark); to expel tape worms (bark)

Myroxylon balsamum

For asthma, colds and flu, rheumatism and external wounds (leaves and fruit); for abscesses, asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, headache, rheumatism, sores, sprains, tuberculosis, venereal diseases, and wounds (sap)

Nepeta cataria

In hysteria, amenorrhea, chlorosis and toothache, for colds, flus, fevers, infectious childhood diseases, to prevent miscarriage and premature birth as well as allays morning sickness (plant); in toothache (leaves)

Ocimum americanum

The leaves in the form of paste are used in skin infections like eczema and also applied to the finger and toe nails during fever when the extremities are cold. The juice of the leaves is given in cold, catarrh and bronchitis in children. A decoction of the plant is used for cough and of leaves for dysentery and also as mouth wash for relieving toothache.

Perilla frutescens

For alleviating spasms, as a sedative, antiasthmatic, stimulating the secretion of gastric juices and as a tonic (plant); colds, chest stuffiness, vomiting, abdominal pain etc (leaves); to cuts and wounds (leaf juice); for morning sickness (stem)

Pimenta dioica

To treat arthrosis, athlete’s foot, bruise, candidiasis, cold, colic, corns, cramps, diabetes, diarrhea, dysmenorrhea, dyspepsia, fatigue, fever, gastric disorders, gingivosis, high blood pressure, mycosis, neuralgia, rheumatism, toothache, vaginosis.

Pimenta racemosa

Used to treat adenopathy, cancer, chest cold, diarrhea, dyspepsia, edema, elephantiasis, fever, headache, nausea, pleurisy, pneumonia, rheumatism, toothache, varicosis and vertigo.

Pinus gerardiana

As a dressing on wounds, ulcers,in the treatment of head diseases (seed oil); in the treatment of kidney and bladder complaints and is used both internally and as a rub and steam bath in the treatment of rheumatic affections (resin); is useful in treating diseases of the mucous membranes and respiratory complaints such as coughs, colds, influenza and TB.

Plantago ovata

In the treatment of dysentery, catarrhal conditions of the genito-urinary tract, inflamed membranes of the intestinal canal etc.A decoction of seeds is prescribed in cough and cold, and the crushed seeds made into a poultice are applied to rheumatic and glandular swelling.

Polemonium reptans

For fever and inflammation, to snakebites, coughs, colds, bronchitis, laryngitis, tuberculosis and skin conditions (dried root)

Premna integrifolia

The decoction of the root is said to be a cordial, stomachic and useful in liver disorders. It forms an ingredient of Dasamoola. A decoction of the leaves is used in the treatment of colic and flatulence while that of the tender plants is used for rheumatism and neuralgia. The leaves are rubbed along with pepper and administered in cold and fever, also in gonorrhoea and during convalescence from fevers.

Prinsepia utilis

In rheumatism, to the forehead and temples in the treatment of coughs and colds, pains resulting from over-fatigue (oil). A paste of this seedcake is used as a poultice to treat ringworm or eczema.

Putranjiva roxburghii

For cold and fever, in rheumatism (leaves and stones)

Rhododendron anthopogon

To treat lack of appetite, coughing and various skin disorders; to treat coughs and colds (leaves); in the treatment of inflammations, lung disorders and general weakening of the body.

Rhododendron campanulatum

In rheumatism, sciatica and syphilis (leaf); used as a snuff in the treatment of colds and headache (leaves); used in the treatment of phthisis and chronic fevers (dried twigs and wood).

Rosa canina

In the treatment of colds, influenza, minor infectious diseases, scurvy, diarrhoea and gastritis (hips)

Sida cordifolia

Spermatorrhea, polyuria and leucorrhea (plant); aphrodisiac (seed); reducing fever (root); sciatica, in paralysis and other nervous disorders (root bark); used to detoxify the body (in fever and rheumatism), in asthma, bronchitis, obesity, aching joints and bones, edema, cough, cold and wheezing (plant extract).

Stachytarpheta jamaicensis

As an antiinflammatory and reducing fever, for treating intestinal worms, venereal diseases, erysipelas, dropsy, asthma, bronchitis, rheumatism and stomach ailments (indigestion, acid reflux, ulcers, constipation, dyspepsia, slow digestion) (plant); for cataract and open sores (plant juice); for colds and cough, in cardiac troubles and are also rubbed on sprains and bruises or used as cataplasm for boils (leaves); applied topically to treat dysentery (Paste of stem and root bark)

Tagetes erecta

Diseases of the eye and hemorrhoids (flower); rheumatism, bronchitis and colds (plant); as a laxative (root). It is used internally in the treatment of indigestion, colic, severe constipation, coughs and dysentery. Externally, it is used to treat sores, ulcers, eczema, sore eyes and rheumatism. A decoction of the flowers is used to treat colds, conjunctivitis, mumps, sore eyes etc.

Thymus linearis

In suppressed urine & menstruation, catarrh, and whooping-coughs (plant);in asthma, cold and to expel round worm (dried leaves); to cure gum and toothache (young flower) .

Thymus vulgaris

The plant is used internally in the treatment of dry coughs, whooping cough, bronchitis, bronchial catarrh, cold, asthma, laryngitis, indigestion, gastritis and diarrhoea and enuresis in children. Externally, it is used in the treatment of tonsillitis, gum diseases, rheumatism, arthritis and fungal infections (Athlete's foot).The whole herb is used in the treatment of digestive disorders, sore throats, fevers etc.

Tilia cordata

In maladies associated with chills (such as influenza and catarrh), in the treatment of colds and other ailments where sweating is desirable (flowers); in the treatment of indigestion, hypertension, hardening of the arteries, hysteria, nervous vomiting or palpitation (flower tea); gastric or dyspeptic disturbances, to burns or sore places (wood)

Trifolium repens

In gout (flower); coughs, colds, fevers and leucorrhoea (infusion); in rheumatism and scrofula (plant).

Tropaeolum majus

For infections of the upper respiratory tracts, for sores, genito-urinary diseases, scurvy and poor skin and hair conditions (plant); Externally used is used in the treatment of baldness, minor injuries and skin eruptions.

Tussilago farfara

For inflammations of the upper respiratory tract (such as in emphysema and silicosis) and ailments associated with chills (both of the aforementioned conditions are usually associated with a cough) (leaf and flower); in colds, coughs, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, rheumatism, nervous disorders and asthma (leaves)

Vaccinium vitis-idaea

In urinary tract infections; in the treatment of gonorrhoea, arthritis, rheumatism, diabetes and diarrhoea (leaves); for diarrhoea and as a treatment for sore throats, coughs and colds (mature fruits); as a gargle in treatment for sore throats (juice of the plant).

Zingiber officinalis

A household remedy for flatulence and colic, for diarrhoea from relaxed bowel where there is no inflammation, for atherosclerosis, heart disease, chemotherapy support, migraine headaches, morning sickness, motion sickness, nausea and vomiting following surgery, rheumatoid arthritis, belching, laryngitis, vomiting, constipation, incontinence, flatulence, colic, spasms, fever, eye diseases, asthma, colds, cough, arthritis, bursitis, fibrocystic breasts, lymphedema, in nervous diseases, and for incontinence of urine.
