Health Remedies - Deafness
Deafness is an inability to hear. It may be partial or total hearing loss. Hearing loss can be conductive (due to faulty transmission of sound waves) or sensorineural (faulty sound reception by nerve cells), or both. Common causes of conductive hearing loss are wax blocking the ear, a perforated eardrum, ear infection or fluid in the ears. Sensorineural deafness can be caused by heredity or congenital problems, excess noise, old age, medications, or infections such as ear infections and meningitis.
A person's normal hearing threshold is 0 dB to 20 dB (which means the person is able to hear a sound of 0 - 20 dB and above, a sound of whisper). When the threshold is 20 - 40 dB it is mild hearing loss and when the threshold is 40 - 60 dB it is moderate hearing loss. Threshold above 60 dB is considered severe hearing loss and that above 80 dB is considered profound hearing loss.
