Tetanus is an infectious disease caused by the toxin (poison) produced by the bacteria, Clostridium tetani. It is not directly transmitted from person to person. Instead, tetanus spores may be introduced into the body through a puncture wound contaminated with soil, street dust, animal feces; injected contaminated street drugs; lacerations; burns; or even trivial or unnoticed wounds.

The time between an injury and the occurrence of the first symptoms is typically less than two weeks but may range from 5 days to 15 weeks. The symptoms may include stiffness of jaw, neck and other muscles, muscular irritability, difficulty swallowing and fever. Spasms of the respiratory muscles may cause difficulty in breathing and death can occur without life-support measures.

Useful herbs

Eclipta prostrata	Tetanus, baldness, long-term skin diseases, in enlargements of the liver and spleen (as a tonic and deobstruent) (plant); in catarrhal jaundice (plant juice and "aromatics"); as an antiseptic in cattle wounds etc. and in syphilis (root), removes worms, cough and indigestion, good remedy for dental disorders. Various local traditions and Ayurveda employ its parts for elephantiasis, migraine, pyorrhoea, chronic dysentery, oedema, nervous weakness, anorexia, gum troubles and to remove intestinal worms.This plant invigorates sex and consumed for fertility. It is an antidote for poisons.
Moringa oleifera	Used in paralytic conditions and intermittent fever; also useful as rubefacient in rheumatism, in spasmodic affections of the bowels, hysteria and flatulence as well as in epilepsy (roots); in diseases of liver and spleen, in tetanus and paralysis (fruit); in rheumatism (seed oil); in dental caries, otalgia and headache (gum).
Veratrum viride	Cures puerperal fever, phthisis pulmonalis, acute rheumatism, gastric irritation, colic, tetanus, acute gonorrhea, active cerebral engorgement, exophthalmic goiter with tachycardia, aneurism, acute cases of pneumonia, peritonitis, threatened apoplexy, chronic coughs, constipation, for bruises, sprains, fractures, to treat aches and pains
