Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver, resulting in liver cell damage and destruction. It can be "viral" or "non-viral". Viral hepatitis is commonly caused by one of six viruses, called hepatitis A,B,C,D,E and G. Other viruses can also cause hepatitis, including cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, yellow fever, etc. The non-viral hepatitis may be caused by alcohol, toxins, drugs, autoimmune diseases, Wilson's disease etc. In the initial stages hepatitis produce symptoms such as mild fever, muscle or joint aches, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue etc. As the condition worsens, the patient may experience additional symptoms such as jaundice, dark urine, light colored stools that may contain pus, enlarged spleen, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, circulation problems etc. Chronic hepatitis if untreated, may lead to scarring, called cirrhosis or to hepatic carcinoma and causes permanent liver damage. |
