Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes ulcers in the lining of the rectum and colon. When the inflammation is limited to the rectum, it is called ulcerative proctitis. The cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown. Major symptoms include intermittent rectal bleeding, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, passing mucus and pain. Symptoms may also include fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, anemia caused by severe bleeding etc. Long-standing ulcerative colitis increases the risk for colon cancer. |
