Acacia julibrissin

In the treatment of insomnia, irritability, breathlessness and poor memory (flower heads); in the treatment of insomnia, irritability, boils and carbuncles, to injuries and swellings (stem bark)

Adenostoma fasciculatum

In the treatment of rheumatism and as a wash for infected, sore or swollen parts of the body (leaves and branches)

Alhagi pseudalhagi

Rheumatism (oil); for swellings and abscesses (root decoction); for fever (leaves); as a blood coagulant (flowers); for chest pain and headache (leaf infusion)

Alisma plantago-aquatica

Helps to treat renal calculus, cystitis, dysentery and epilepsy (dried leaves); for hydrophobia, to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels, oliguria, oedema, nephritis, acute diarrhoea and fatty liver (roots); for leprosy, to bruises and swellings (fresh leaves); to promote conception (whole plant).

Alnus glutinosa

To bathe swellings and inflammations, especially of the mouth and throat, to treat lice and a range of skin problems such as scabies and scabs (bark); to help reduce breast engorgement in nursing mothers, for treating cancer of the breast, duodenum, oesophagus, face, pylorus, pancreas, rectum, throat, tongue, and uterus (leaves)

Anemarrhena asphodeloides

For fevers accompanied with dryness in the lungs, stomach or kidneys, ulcers, cancer, childbirth, cough, diabetes, dysentery, fever, hyperglycemia, inflammation, lumbago, morning sickness, osteosis, pneumonia, scarlet fever, spermatorrhea, tuberculosis, typhoid, typhus, vertigo.

Angelica atropurpurea

In the treatment of colds, rheumatism etc (leaves); in the treatment of fevers, colds, flatulent colic and other stomach disorders, obstructed menses and as a general tonic for women, as a gargle for sore throats and mouths and as a poultice for broken bones, swellings etc (infusion)

Aralia racemosa

In the treatment of pulmonary diseases, asthma, rheumatism etc (herb); to sores, burns, itchy skin, ulcers, swellings etc (root/fruit).Externally it is used as a poultice in treating rheumatism and skin problems such as eczema.

Balsamorhiza sagittata

For stomach pains, colds, whooping cough, TB, fevers and headaches (leaves, root and stem); to treat sore mouths and throats, toothaches, for body aches such as rheumatism, on wounds, blisters, bites, swellings and sores (root); for dysentery (seeds)

Basella alba

As a poultice for swellings (root); for constipation, especially for children and pregnant women (leaf juice).

Bauhinia purpurea

Used to treat gastric ulcer, swellings, leprosy, cough, menstrual disorders, glandular diseases and prolapse of the rectum, haemorrhagic diseases, leucorrhoea and coughs.

Blumea lacera

In hemorrhoids; in cholera, to relieve dryness of skin (root); Root paste is sticked on and around swelling region to prevent from cutaneous infection.

Calotropis gigantea

Toothache and laxative (plant juice); altering secretion of stomach acids, in the treatment of skin diseases, asthma, elephantiasis and leprosy (flowers); paralysis, arthralgia, swellings and intermittent fevers (leaves). The tribals of South Rajasthan apply latex in the treatment of Guinea worm disease (Joshi, 1991).

Capparis decidua

Useful in cough, asthma and inflammations (root bark); as a poultice on boils and swellings, to relieve toothache (tender leaves); in remittent fevers and rheumatism (stem bark); to animals for stomach disturbances (decoction of ariel parts).

Capparis zeylanica

Hemorrhoids, boils, piles and swellings (leaf); cholera and stomach problems (powdered root bark).

Cardiospermum halicacabum

Pain and rheumatism (plant paste); earache, rheumatism, as a poultice on swellings (leaf), lowers blood pressure, to treat stomach diseases, rat-poisoning, snake-poisoning, cough with fever, scrotal enlargement, alopecia, anaemia and jaundice.

Citrus grandis

In chorea and epilepsy (leaf); ulcers and swellings (leaf decoction); discomfort in the abdominal area and edema (fruit); severe cough (rind and leaf); indigestion (rind); lumbago (seed).

Curcuma angustifolia

For subnormal body temperature, fever, diarrhoea and gravel (rhizome); for jaundice (tuber powder). The juice obtained by crushing the rhizome is rubbed on swellings of the body. A paste of the rhizome is bound with a cloth on fractures. The essential plant oil is used to expel intestinal worms.

Cyamopsis tetragonoloba

Removes biliousness and night-blindness (fruit); in curing sprains and swellings (soaked seeds); for the plague, enlarged livers, head-swellings and on swellings due to broken bones (boiled seeds)

Delphinium zalil

Useful in jaundice, dropsy and troubles of the spleen. It is also employed as a poultice for swellings.

Dioscorea pentaphylla

In anasarca and dropsy (plant); rheumatism (tuber decoction). The tuber is used as an external application to disperse swellings, and also as a tonic. Its decoction is used externally to relieve rheumatism.

Enicostema axillare

Snakebite and fever (plant decoction); as a carminative, a restorative agent and in diabetes. The crushed plant mixed with water is used as a restorative. The whole plant, dried, powdered and mixed with honey, is used as a blood-purifier and to relieve dropsy, rheumatism, abdominal ulcers, hernia, swellings, itches, insect poisoning and to expel worms.

Helianthus annuus

Employed in the treatment of bronchial, laryngeal and pulmonary affections, coughs and colds, also in whooping cough. The crushed leaves are used as a poultice on sores, swellings, snakebites and spider bites. A tea made from the flowers is used in the treatment of malaria and lung ailments. A decoction of the roots has been used as a warm wash on rheumatic aches and pains.

Kaempferia rotunda

Mumps, wounds and swellings. Tubers and whole plant in the form of powder or ointment is applied to wounds and bruises to reduce swellings; used in mumps and cancerous swellings also. It is given internally in cases of pyaemia with the idea of removing blood or pus from the body.

Kalanchoe pinnata

Boils, wounds, swellings and insect bites. For all types of pain and inflammation. For earaches (leaf juice dropped into ear); for upper respiratory infections, flu, and fever.

Lannea coromandelica

Indigestion, toothache and debility (bark decoction); sprains and body aches (leaf); as a lotion for bruises, wounds, sores, and ulcers (due to leprosy) (bark); in asthma and as a cordial to women during lactation (gum); in sprains and bruises, local swellings, pains of body and in elephantiasis (boiled leaf)

Lonicera japonica

In dysentery, chronic psoriasis, to reduce blood pressure (plant); acute rheumatoid arthritis, mumps and hepatitis (stems); upper respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia) and dysentery (stem and flowers together); syphilitic skin diseases and tumors, bacterial dysentery, colds, enteritis, pain, swellings etc (flower buds)

Nerium oleander

In ulcers, chancre and hemorrhoids (root paste); skaly skin maladies (oil from root bark); ophthalmia (fresh leaf juice);in the treatment of scabies, and to reduce swellings (leaf decoction); in the treatment of leprosy and skin diseases of a scaly nature (root oil). The whole plant has anticancer properties.

Ononis spinosa

For inflammations of the urinary tract and bladder, in colic (due to stones), swolen areas and rheumatism and chronic skin disorders

Phyllanthus amarus

Jaundice and liver diseases, diabetes, influenza, asthma, infections of the bronchial tubes, indigestion, colic, dropsy, as an astringent, diuretic and disorders of the urogenital system and kidney (plant). The whole plant is used to treat jaundice, chronic dysentery, dyspepsia, cough, asthma, indigestion, diabetes, urinary tract diseases, skin diseases, ulcer, sores and swelling. Whole plant is used in gonorrhoea, menorrhagia and other genital affections. It is also useful in dropsy, jaundice, diarrhoea, dysentery, intermittent fevers, ophthalmopathy, scabies, ulcers and wounds. Young shoots and leaves are given in dysentery and ulcers. Fresh root is an excellent remedy for jaundice. The decoction of the plant is a remedy for intermittent fevers and intermittents with infarcts of the spleen and liver.

Phyllanthus fraternus

Used in gastric complaints including dyspepsia, colic, diarrhoea and dysentery; also employed in dropsy and diseases of urino-genital system, in diabetes (plant); in dysentery (young shoots); for jaundice (fresh roots); as a refrigerant for scalp (leaves decoction); for application on oedematous swellings and ulcers (leaves, roots); to offensive sores and ulcers (latex).

Phyllanthus urinaria

To treat dropsy, gonorrhoea, frequent menstruation, anemia and diabetes and as a poultice for skin ulcers, sores, swelling and itchiness (whole plant); used in jaundice and gonorrhoea (decoction of leaves); in treating kidney and gall stones, the lowering of viral load in hepatitis disease (Dried leaves)

Plantago lanceolata

For healing wounds, ulcers, cuts, swellings and in coughs (root and leaf); diarrhoea, gastritis, peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, haemorrhage, haemorrhoids, cystitis, bronchitis, catarrh, sinusitis, asthma and hay fever (leaf; used in the treatment of parasitic worms and constipation (seed)

Plantago major

It is used in inflammation of the skin, malignant ulcers, intermittent fever, etc., and as a vulnerary, and externally as a stimulant application to sores. The leaves arrest external haemorrhage. The fresh leaves are applied whole or bruised in the form of a poultice. Rubbed on parts of the body stung by insects, nettles, etc., or as an application to burns and scalds. Internally, they are used in the treatment of a wide range of complaints including diarrhoea, gastritis, peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, haemorrhage, haemorrhoids, cystitis, bronchitis, catarrh, sinusitis, asthma and hay fever. They are used externally in treating skin inflammations, malignant ulcers, cuts, stings etc. The heated leaves are used as a wet dressing for wounds, swellings etc. The root is a remedy for the bite of rattlesnakes. The seeds are used in the treatment of parasitic worms. Plantain seeds contain up to 30% mucilage which swells up in the gut, acting as a bulk laxative and soothing irritated membranes. A distilled water made from the plant makes an excellent eye lotion.

For diarrhea and as an astringent (plant).

Rosa indica

For sprains, ulcers and wounds (fruit); in dysmenorrhoea, poor circulation, stomach pains and swellings (flower buds); used in the treatment of arthritis, boils, coughs etc (decoction of leaves, fruits and roots).

Salix tetrasperma

Rheumatism, epilepsy, swellings, piles, venereal diseases, and stones in bladder (leaves)

Smilax zeylanica

Rheumatism, spermatorrhoea, dysentery and in venereal diseases (root). A decoction of the bulbous roots is used to promote healing of sores, swellings and abscesses. In Ayurvedic practice, the roots are used to treat diseases of the nervous system and urinary disorders.

Solanum dulcamara

In the treatment of skin diseases, warts, tumours, felons, arthritis, rheumatism, bronchial congestion, heart ailments, ulcerative colitis, jaundice, skin eruptions, ulcers and cellulite, syphilitic diseases, cachectic affections, scrofula, indurations from milk, leucorrhoea, jaundice, and obstructed menstruation (herb); to cancerous sores and other swellings (fruit); for cancer and swellings (root)

Streblus asper

In fever, dysentery and diarrhoea (bark decoction); to snake-bitten person as an antidote, to unhealthy ulcers, sinuses, in epilepsy and inflammatory swellings and is applied to boils (root); in epistaxis, piles, diarrhoea etc (seeds).

Withania somnifera

Rheumatism (root and plant); to coagulate milk (seed); as a uterine sedative, in dropsy, ulcers, scabies, asthma, cough and as a tonic (root); cancer and AIDS; “rasayana agent” in “Ayurveda” medicine (enhances sexual performance),to treat nervous exhaustion, debility, insomnia, wasting diseases, failure to thrive in children, impotence, infertility, multiple sclerosis, applied as a poultice to boils, swellings and other painful parts.
