Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin are destroyed. It is characterized by chalk white patches of skin often located symmetrically on both sides of the body and white hairs within depigmented patches. The actual cause of vitiligo is unknown. Factors such as heredity, exposure to chemicals such as phenol or catechol, stress, autoimmune disorder, skin injury, burns, inflammatory skin disorders etc. It may also be precipitated by conditions such as diabetes, pernicious anemia, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, Addison's disease, uveitis (inflammation of the eyes) or alopecia areata. Vitiligo is not painful or dangerous and it is not also contagious.

Useful herbs

Abelmoschus esculentus

Gonorrhoea and problems with the urogenital system (mucilage of fruit); catarrh and throat problems (fruit capsule); as a poultice (leaf and fruit capsule); gonorrhea (roots and leaves);the immature capsules is demulcent, diuretic and emollient; the seeds are antispasmodic, cordial, stimulant and allay thirst, cure stomatitis, dyspepsia, urinary discharge,leucoderma and itch.

Acacia chundra

For abscesses (leaf and stem bark)reduces tooth hypersensitivity, sponginess of gums, relieves sore throat, bleeding, ulceration of gums, leucoderma (bark and leaves).

Aegle marmelos

In ophthalmia and jaundice (leaf); in constipation, cholera, dysentery, diarrhea and intestinal ulcers (fruit); leucoderma, to alleviate asthma (leaf decoction); in diabetes (root bark); in scurvy (fruit pulp).

Albizia lebbeck

For boils (flower); in leprosy, asthma, skin diseases, leucoderma, sprains, wounds, neuralgia, nightblindness, diarrhoea (stem bark).

Altingia excelsa

Leucoderma and scabies (resin); It is useful in itching, lumbago, menorrhagia and early stages of hydrocele and also for increasing the secretion of gastric juices.

Ammi majus

In leukoderma and psoriasis (plant decoction); in asthma and angina (Seed infusion); in toothache (Seed decoction)

Anacardium occidentale

For diarrhea, dysentery, colic, as an internal and external antiseptic against bacterial infections, for all kinds of stomach ulcers, for ear and eye infections and to stop bleeding and heal wounds. For calluses, corns, and warts, cancerous ulcers, and even elephantiasis (fruit bark juice and the nut oil); dysentery, fever, inappetence, leucoderma, piles, tumors, and obstinate ulcers (fruit); for sore throat (leaf decoction)

Aristolochia indica

For sporadic fever, worm, wounds, leucoderma, impotency, inflammations, biliousness and dry cough; promotes digestion and controls menstruation.

Balanites aegyptiaca

In rheumatism (seed oil); stomach problems and as an expectorant (seed); useful in burns, wounds and ulcers, common cold, whooping cough, leucoderma, malaria, sleeping sickness and other skin diseases.

Canscora decussata

Nerve disorders, in insanity, scrofula and epilepsy (plant decoction); as laxative and tonic; as a febrifuge; to promote memory power, cure leprosy, ulcers, oedema, urinary disorders and snake-bites; to treat liver disorders, intermittent fever, leucoderma, tuberculosis, inflammation and abdominal troubles.

Careya arborea

Snakebite antidote (fruit and bark), in treating body pain, fever, cold, cough, and leucoderma. The plant parts are used to treat snakebite, ulcers, healing wound, cough, cold, abscesses and dysentery.

Centratherum anthelminticum

In cholera, syphilis and constipation (plant); giardiasis (50% EtOH achene extract), for treating skin diseases and leucoderma in Ayurvedic practice.

Clerodendrum serratum

Asthma, dyspepsia, anorexia, flatulence, helminthiasis, tubercular glands, leucoderma (root) and bronchitis (root and plant decoction). Leaves as external application for cephalagia and opthalmia.

Clitoria ternatea

To treat oedema, mental disorder, goiter, vitiligo, snake-poisoning, toothache, eye disease, as aphrodisiac, filaria, leprosy (plant juice); dysentery, severe bronchitis, asthma, consumption, ascites and abdominal enlargement.

Ficus carica

In leucoderma (leaf); removing kidney stones (fruit); as a poultice (in boils) (roasted fruit); catarrhal affections of the nose and throat; as a poultice in the treatment of mouth sores, dental abscesses etc.

Indigofera tinctoria

Epilepsy, lumbago, asthma, leucoderma, hemorrhoids and enlargement of the liver and spleen (plant); in damage to the liver (alcohol extract from plant); convulsions in infants, hysteria, chorea and amenorrhea.

Opuntia dillenii

Ophthalmia and for boils (leaf); cures biliousness, burning, leucoderma, urinary complaints, tumours, loss of consciousness, piles, inflammations, anaemia, ulcers, gonorrhoea and the enlargement of the spleen (fruit) ; whooping cough (baked fruit); to increase the secretion of bile and control spasmodic cough and expectoration (fruit syrup); in bronchitis and asthma (flower).

Pandanus fascicularis

In syphilis, leprosy, smallpox and leucoderma (leaf); earache and diseases of the blood (anther). Its leaves are known for their aromatic, bitter and pungent properties and are used in leprosy, leucoderma, scabies, small pox and syphilis. Besides, an oil obtained from its bracts is administered in headache and rheumatism.

Pastinaca sativa

In the treatment of women's complaints (in menstrual cramps, premenstrual syndrome and menopausal disorders), psoriasis, vitiligo and bed wetting in chidren (root)

Pedilanthus tithymaloides

Leucoderma, sprains and syphilis(latex).

Pongamia pinnata

As a tonic (seed) and in hemorrhoids (stem bark); chronic fevers, rheumatism, lumbago, herpes, scabies, leucoderma and other skin diseases, flatulence, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, cough, leprosy and gonorrhoea (plant); on the head to heal ulcers and cure dandruff (leaf paste); used for cleaning sores, as well as for cleaning teeth and strengthening gums (root juice).

Psoralea corylifolia

Skin diseases, vitiligo, poisoning, for conception, caries, deafness, filaria, wound, as rejuvinative, febrile diseases, premature ejaculation, impotence, lower back pains, frequent urination, incontinence, bed wetting etc. It is also used externally to treat various skin ailments including leprosy, leucoderma and hair loss.

Semecarpus anacardium

To treat skin diseases, vitiligo, piles, guineaworm, splenomegaly, scrofula, rheumatism, as depilatory, for regaining normal colour, as rejuvinative, as aphrodisiac, alopecia, worms, poisoning, malarial fever.

Solanum nigrum

Hemorrhoids, liver problems (including cirrhosis), as an emollient, eye-diseases, rat poisoning, skin diseases, oedema, cough, urticarial patches, for achieving conception and to relieve from difficult labour and as a rejuvinative(plant); used externally ease pain and abate inflammation, and are applied to burns and ulcers (fresh leaves); for ringworm, gout and earache, and mixed with vinegar, is said to be good as a gargle and mouthwash (leaf juice); used externally as a poultice, wash etc in the treatment of cancerous sores, boils, leucoderma and wounds (leaves, stem and root); as an analgesic for toothaches (fruit juice).

Thalictrum foliolosum

In ophthalmia, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, skin discoloration, reducing fever, in piles, leucoderma, eczema, boils, toothache, atonic indigestion, as a tonic and laxative (root); pains in the abdomen (root decoction); rheumatism and gout (plant)

Trichodesma zeylanicum

In hemorrhoids (plant); analgesic (root); as a diuretic and demulcent (leaf). In Ayurveda the plant is considered alexipharmic and is used to treat leucoderma and piles.

Vernonia anthelmintica

As a scorpion sting antidote, anthelmintic, tonic and increasing the secretion of gastric juices. The seeds are anthelmintic and are used in many areas as a febrifuge and for treating skin diseases and leucoderma in Ayurvedic practice. The seeds are also tonic, stomachic and diuretic.

Vernonia cinerea

Useful for the purifying the blood, bile and semen, used as a specific for leucorrhoea, menorrhagia, and in the treatment of chronic skin diseases, dysuria, strangury, bladder stones, piles, worms and haematological disorders (plant); for the treatment of amoebiosis, humid herpes, eczema and ringworm and for the extraction of guinea worms, elephantiasis (leaf juice); to treat fevers, rheumatism and conjunctivitis (flowers); effective against roundworms and threadworms, leucoderma, psoriasis and other chronic skin diseases (seeds).

Xanthium strumarium

In leucoderma, epilepsy, in chronic malaria, leucorrhoea and urinary diseases (plant); in smallpox, in cancer and scrofula (root); on ulcers, boils and abscesses (root extract); in the treatment of rheumatism, diseased kidneys and tuberculosis (plant infusion); allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, catarrh, rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, constipation, diarrhoea, lumbago, leprosy and pruritis (fruits)

Zanthoxylum alatum

Leucoderma, problems with the spleen, diseases of the eye and ear, asthma and tumors (fruit); for gastrointestinal disorders; in treating tumours, odontalgia, cephalagia, opthalmia, dyspepsia, colic, flatulence, helminthiasis, diarrhoea, hepatopathy, splenitis, strangury, fever, leucoderma, leprosy, skin diseases, cough, asthma, paralysis, gout, convulsions, diabetes, wounds, ulcers, stomatitis, pharyngitis, cardiac debility and general debility (bark and fruit)

Zanthoxylum armatum

In eye and ear diseases, headache, leucoderma and in spleen - enlargement; in dental problems, scabies, dyspepsia and fevers (fruits); in fever and dyspepsia (seeds); in toothache (stems with thorns); in cholera (bark infusion).
