Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin. The important forms of dermatitis are contact, seborrheic, and atopic dermatitis. Contact dermatitis occurs with an allergen such as poison ivy or an irritant such as skin soap. Seborrheic dermatitis occurs as greasy, scaling areas at the sides of the nose, between eyebrows, behind the ears or over the breastbone. This type can appear as a stubborn, itchy dandruff. Atopic dermatitis occurs as itchy, thickened, fissured skin, most often in the folds of the elbows or backs of the knees. Other types of dermatitis include neurodermatitis, stasis dermatitis, dyshidrotic dermatitis and perioral dermatitis.
Symptoms of dermatitis include redness, dryness and itching of skin. Some acute attacks may result in crusty scales or blisters that ooze fluid. Dermatitis scars should be differentiated from the scars caused by psoriasis, skin cancer, and seborrhea.
For dysentery, dermatitis and other inflammations of the skin and raucous membranes (green pods); to relieve bronchial passages and for sore throats (dried gum). A tannin-rich extract has been prepared from the leaves and young shoots and used in decoction and applied to inflammed tissue and burns to promote rapid healing.
In the treatment of upper respiratory infections such as tonsillitis and pharyngitis, and is also valuable in treating infections of the chest, gastro-intestinal tract and skin (infusion); soothes sore or infected nipples and infected skin conditions (root); as a gargle to treat mouth ulcers, gum infections and sore throats (decoction of plant).
In depression, fever, skin and mucous membrane inflammations, wounds and as an aid with urinary infections in juveniles and the old; may help in menopause.
Stomach problems (leaf) and as a tonic (root). The whole plant is used to treat dyspepsia, indigestion, dysentery, vomiting, thirst fever, dermatitis, psoriasis, ulcer bleeding diseases, obesity, asthma and pediatric disorders like diarrhoea, thirst, vomiting and fever.
As a tonic, aphrodisiac and expectorant (plant decoction); used for the treatment of leprosy, asthma, biliousness, urinary discharges, external inflammation and pains.
Cholera (plant); as an emollient for inflammations of the skin, a demulcent and in fever (seed decoction). They are used in the treatment of dyspepsia caused by cereals, infantile lacto-dyspepsia, regurgitation of milk and breast distension. It is taken internally as a nutritious food or as barley water and is of special use for babies and invalids, to reduce excessive lactation. Barley is also used as a poultice for burns and wounds.
In scrofula, syphilis, eczema and herpes (bark and leaf); rheumatism (fruit); as a vermifuge, laxative and in skin diseases (fruit oil); in dysentery and colic (kernel); to treat constipation, chronic coughs, asthma, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, skin ailments and purify the blood; coughs and vertigo (male inflorescences); in the treatment of diarrhoea and anaemia, low back pain, frequent urination, weakness of both legs, chronic cough, asthma, constipation due to dryness or anaemia and stones in the urinary tract, as a poultice to areas of dermatitis and eczema (rind); menstrual problems and dry skin conditions (seed oil); in the treatment of cancer (cotyledons).
Sweet basil acts principally on the digestive and nervous systems, easing flatulence, stomach cramps, colic and indigestion. It is taken internally in the treatment of feverish illnesses, poor digestion, nausea, abdominal cramps, gastro-enteritis, migraine, insomnia, depression and exhaustion. Externally, they are used to treat acne, loss of smell, insect stings, snake bites and skin infections. The mucilaginous seed is given in infusion in the treatment of gonorrhoea, dysentery and chronic diarrhoea. It is remove film and opacity from the eyes also. The root is used in the treatment of bowel complaints in children. Extracts from the plant are bactericidal and are also effective against internal parasites.
In diarrhea, toothache, as a tonic and stimulant (essential oil); as an emmenagogue, in infections of the upper respiratory tract and skin, coughs and periodontal disease (plant); rheumatism (essential oil and plant); in the treatment of colds, bronchitis, asthma, arthritis, muscular pain, influenza, mild feverish illnesses, indigestion, stomach upsets and painful menstruation (plant)
In skin maladies (such as ringworm and sores), urethral diseases (urethritis), as an antiseptic and cardiotonic; to cure ringworm and other parasitic infections, in rheumatism and renal colic (plant); used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, pains and aches in the legs and sides, hypertension, sciatica, weeping dermatitis, scurvy, scrofula, syphilis and mastitis (decoction of the plant).
In hemorrhoids and skin disorders (such as psoriasis) (bark); dysentery (seed); dermatitis. It is effective in psoriasis and nonspecific dermatitis. The leaves are used in various skin disorders including herpes. It has antidandruff activity and is used in the treatment of various scalp and skin disorders.
