Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by weakness and rapid fatigue of any of the muscles under voluntary control. It is a neuromuscular disorder causing a defect in the transmission of nerve impulses to muscles at the neuromuscular junction. Myasthenia gravis may cause double vision, drooping eyelids, difficulties with speech, chewing, swallowing and breathing, as well as weakness of the limbs. As the disease progresses, it causes extreme muscle weakness, particularly of the diaphragm and chest muscles that support breathing and is known as "myasthenic crisis". Myasthenic crisis is a potentially life-threatening complication of myasthenia gravis that requires supportive assisted ventilation. |
