Prostatitis is any form of inflammation of the prostate gland. The prostate gland produces semen, the fluid that helps nourish and transport sperm. Prostatitis most often occurs due to infection (commonly due to bacteria) of the prostate gland. The other causes may include heavy lifting, interstitial cystitis, excessive exercise, pelvic muscle spasm, structural abnormalities of the urinary tract etc.
Prostatis may be acute or chronic in onset. The most common symptom is a burning sensation and pain while urination. The other symptoms are penile, pelvic or rectal pain, often felt deep between the legs, pain on or after ejaculation, premature ejaculation, blood in semen etc. There may be a penile discharge if a STD (Sexually transmitted disease) is present.
For menstrual problems (such as dysmennorhea), vaginal discharges, gastrointestinal problems (where diarrhea and spasms are involved), inflammations within the urinary tract, mouth and throat, boils and phlebitis, in conjunctivitis, cuts and wounds.
For kidney and bladder infections, cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis, gravel, inflammation and catarrh of the bladder, painful and burning urination, dysuria, colds and flu, stomach aches, fluid retention, heartburn, inflammation of the colon, rheumatism and inflammation of the gums.
As a topical antiseptic for ear, eye, and skin infections, for digestive problems, prostate and urinary infections, hypertension and high cholesterol levels (leaves); to tone, balance, and strengthen liver function and for hepatitis and liver inflammation/pain, high cholesterol, skin care and skin anti-aging, sinusitis, constipation, relieves stomachaches and asthma (seeds); in healing of minor wounds and burns, prevents scaring and blisters (pulp and oil); treatment of jaundice, diabetes, influenza, dysentry, venereal diseases (root).
For prostatitis, urinary tract infections, to tone, balance, and strengthen the kidneys, vaginal discharge and venereal diseases, testicular inflammation.
Oil constituents of pumpkin seed combined with saw palmetto treated an enlarged prostate gland effectively. The leaves are applied externally to burns.
For desensitization, arthritis, rheumatism, prostatitis, as contraceptives and in the treatment of various disorders of the genitary organs as well as in a host of other diseases such as asthma and arthritis (root)

Overall tonic and appetite stimulant (stomach disorders, arthritis); treat urinary tract infections, kidney, bladder and prostrate disorders; heart problems (leaves in juice form); respitory dysfunctions (chlorophyll); are used as a nutritive tonic to stimulate the appetite, in the treatment of earache, to encourage the clotting of blood and promote weight gain (leaves); has an oestrogenic action and useful in treating problems related to menstruation and the menopause (plant); in the treatment of gravel (plant juice); taken internally for debility in convalescence or anaemia, haemorrhage, menopausal complaints, pre-menstrual tension, fibroids etc (plant); in cases of highly coloured urine (root).
Inflammations of the bladder, urinary tract and prostate (plant); to bites and stings of insects (bruised leaves); to get rid of lice and skin parasites (mericarps). An infusion of the roots and seeds is taken after childbirth to promote lactation and help contract the uterus; as a diuretic where it is effective in ridding the body of stones and in treating jaundice, dropsy, cystitis (plant).
