Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or benign prostatic hypertrophy is an enlargement of prostate gland in men. Prostate enlargement happens to almost all men as they get older. The benign growth occurs when old cells do not die while new cells continue to grow. This accumulation of cells thickens the prostate, which can narrow the urethra, resulting in urination and bladder problems. The symptoms are urinary frequency, urgency, excessive urination at night, hesitancy, incomplete emptying, terminal dribbling, overflow incontinence, or complete urinary retention. BPH occurs most often in men over the age of 60. Untreated BPH carries a risk for developing incontinence, kidney damage, bladder damage, urinary tract infections, bladder stones etc. |
