An overactive bladder is a condition that results from sudden, involuntary contraction of the muscle in the urinary bladder. These contractions are usually spontaneous and cannot be suppressed. This causes a sudden urinary urgency and frequent urination during day and night. It may also cause sudden leakage of urine from the bladder (urge incontinence). The causes of overactive bladder may be stress, urinary tract infections, prostatitis, alcohol, nervous disorders such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis or stroke, pelvic injury, and certain medications such as diuretics, opioid etc. All aspects of the quality of life may be affecting when suffering from an overactive bladder. It may affect travel, work and the sufferer may feel distress, embarrassment, inconvenience, loss of self-esteem and self-control. |
