Hematemesis is defined as the vomiting of the blood or of blood-stained vomitus. A small streak of blood in vomiting may indicate bleeding due to irritation of mouth or nose also. It indicates bleeding in the upper gastro-intestinal tract mainly esophagus and stomach. Hematemesis may be caused by esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, peptic ulcer, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), gastritis, esophagitis, esophageal varices etc. |
