Health Remedies - Aphthous Ulcers (Canker Sores)

Product Categories

Canker sores are small shallow ulcers occurring on the tongue, soft palate, or inside the lips and cheeks. The sores begin as small reddish oval or round swellings. These swellings usually rupture within a day, are covered by a thin white or yellow membrane, and become lined by a red halo. The aphthous ulcer, which itself is often extremely painful, especially when agitated, may be accompanied by a painful swelling of the lymph nodes below the jaw, which can be mistaken for toothache.

The exact cause of canker sores is unknown. They may be triggered by stress, poor nutrition, food allergies, injury from accidental biting, deficiencies in vitamin B12, iron, and folic acid, hormonal changes, and menstrual periods. Untreated canker sores usually last for 5-10 days and then disappear. If it does not heal after two weeks, it should be looked at by a dentist or an oral surgeon as it could be a sign of a more serious condition such as oral cancer.
