Dental caries are commonly known as tooth decay. It is described as a demineralization of the tooth surface caused by bacteria. Dental caries in turn causes dental cavities or holes that damage the structure of teeth. The main symptom of caries is toothache. The type and intensity of the pain varies, depending on the level of decay. Other symptoms associated with dental caries are bad breath, sensitivity to hot and cold, sweet and sour, gum swelling and tooth loss. Destroyed tooth structure does not regenerate. However, the progression of cavities can be stopped by treatment thereby preserving the tooth and preventing further complications.

Useful herbs

Chenopodium album	Anemia (root and leaf); stomach worms (plant oil); for treating burns (leaf juice); as a wash or poultice to bug bites, sunstroke, rheumatic joints and swollen feet, whilst a decoction is used for carious teeth (leaves); urinary problems and are considered useful for relieving the discharge of semen through the urine (seeds)
Citrus medica	In kidney stones, vomiting, as a laxative and anthelmintic (root); as a tonic and stimulant (fruit), to treat tastelessness due to fever, intrinsic haemorrhage, anaemia, jaundice, hiccough, asthma, vomiting, pain in cardiac region, colic, pox, calculus and gravels, dental caries, for easy delivery, foul smell in flatus, erysipelas, headache, anorexia during pregnancy and earache.
Lespedeza cuneata	Testicular tuberculosis, hernia, enuresis, dental caries, toothache, infantile marasmus/ascariasis, snake and dog bites, skin ulcers, dysentery and enteritis (plant decoction).
Mangifera indica	In rheumatism, diphtheria and diarrhea (bark and flower); diabetes, scalds and burns (leaf); for severe bleeding, catarrh, hemoptysis, external ulcers, toothache and for preventing plaques of the teeth; in cases of diarrhea, chronic dysentery, catarrh of the bladder and chronic urethritis resulting from gonorrhea (dried mango flowers); on cracks in the feet and on scabies, and is used to treat syphilis (resinous gum from the trunk); as vermifuges and as astringents in diarrhea, hemorrhages and bleeding hemorrhoids (kernel decoction and powder); for diarrhea, fever, chest complaints, diabetes, hypertension etc (leaf decoction); scurvy and sthomachache (fruit)
Moringa oleifera	Used in paralytic conditions and intermittent fever; also useful as rubefacient in rheumatism, in spasmodic affections of the bowels, hysteria and flatulence as well as in epilepsy (roots); in diseases of liver and spleen, in tetanus and paralysis (fruit); in rheumatism (seed oil); in dental caries, otalgia and headache (gum).
Psoralea corylifolia	Skin diseases, vitiligo, poisoning, for conception, caries, deafness, filaria, wound, as rejuvinative, febrile diseases, premature ejaculation, impotence, lower back pains, frequent urination, incontinence, bed wetting etc. It is also used externally to treat various skin ailments including leprosy, leucoderma and hair loss.
Sapindus mukorossi	Excessive salivation, epilepsy and chlorosis (fruits); dental caries (seed powder); soothe the eczema, psoriasis, itchy skin, sensitive skin
Syzygium aromaticum	As an analgesic and for sensitive teeth and cavities (of the teeth) (essential oil); indigestion, gastric irritation, alleviating nausea and in halitosis (bud); respiratory maladies, sore throat, headache and coryza, for removal of stain in teeth, as salivary stimulator in sublingual pharmaceutical compositions, for treating circulatory diseases such as posttraumatic oedema.
Terminalia chebula	Stomach problems, tooth decay, hemorrhoids, external wounds, ulcers, scalds, inflammation of the mouth mucosa, increases the secretion of gastric juices (fruit); in asthma, sore throat, vomiting, sore eyes, heart diseases, hiccups, indigestion, constipation etc.
