Menorrhagia is chracterized by heavy menstrual bleeding. A normal menstrual bleeding usually bleeding lasts for an average of 7 days, and produces a total blood loss of 30 to 80 ml per cycle. In menorrhagia, the total blood loss exceeds 80 ml per cycle which may or may not be associated with hypermenorrhea (prolonged cycle exceeding 7 days). The terms menorrhagia and hypermenorrhea has been used synonymously.

The important causes for menorrhagia are hormonal imbalance, uterine fibroids, uterine polyps, ovarian cysts, birth control devices, certain medications, cancers and tumors of reproductive tract etc. If menorrhagia persists it may lead to severe anemia and causes tiredness, shortness of breath, faintness, and even angina.

Useful herbs

Abroma augusta

As a uterine tonic, in neuralgia, dysmenorrhoea and regulates menstrual flow (juice of root bark); diabetes, rheumatic pain and sinusitis (leaf).

Achillea millefolium

For various maladies of the major organs and systems throughout the body, abscesses, atony, backache, hemorrhages (including those of the lungs), bruises, burns, cancer, colic, common cold, condyloma, cough, as a depurative agent, in fever,hypertension, menorrhagia, amenorrhoea, haemorrhoids with bloody discharge, atonic gastric and intestinal dyspepsia and leucorrhoea.

Aglaia odorata

To reduce fever (decoction of roots, and flowers); to invigorate, to reduce fever, and to calm itchiness (leaves and roots); used as a drink to reduce menses and to treat venereal diseases (decoction of leaves).

Alchemilla alpina

For cuts and wounds, and internally in the treatment of diarrhoea and a number of women's ailments, especially menstrual problems, helps stop vaginal discharge and is also used as a treatment for excessive menstruation and to heal lesions after pregnancy

Alchemilla vulgaris

Helps reduce pains associated with periods as well as ameliorating excessive bleeding, in easing the changes of the menopause, for diarrhea, as a mouthwash for sores and ulcers and as a gargle for laryngitis

Altingia excelsa

Leucoderma and scabies (resin); It is useful in itching, lumbago, menorrhagia and early stages of hydrocele and also for increasing the secretion of gastric juices.

Amaranthus spinosus

Menorrhagia and gonorrhea (root decoction); colic (root); laxative (leaf and root); leucorrhea.

Angelica sinensis

In the treatment of a wide range of women's complaints where it regulates the menstrual cycle and relieves period pain and also to ensure a healthy pregnancy and easy delivery.It is an ideal tonic for women with heavy menstruation.

Bauhinia variegata

In skin diseases, scrofula, ulcers, leprosy and menstrual problems (bark); dysentery (bark decoction and dried bud); hemorrhoids (bark and dried buds); diarrhea (dried bud); in haemorrhagic disorders (paste of bark, roots and flowers); an antidote to snake poison (root); cough, piles, haematuria and menorrhagia; the flowers are laxative (decoction of bud).

Berberis aristata

Jaundice, diarrhea and skin diseases (root bark juice); sporadic fever and malaria (root bark decoction); in amenorrhea, menorrhagia and leucorrhea (root bark); hemorrhoids, eye and stomach maladies, cholera, stimulating the secretion of gastric juices.

Berberis lycium

Diarrhea, jaundice and skin diseases (root bark juice); eye diseases (root); sporadic fever (root bark decoction); menorrhagia, chronic diarrhoea and piles.

Bergenia ciliata

Tuberculosis and other lungs problems, dysentery, fever, cough, spleen enlargement, ulcers, menorrhagia and urinary disorders (including dysuria and kidney stones) (rhizome); cuts, burns, boils and ophthalmia (root paste).

Bombax ceiba

Snakebite antidote (flower); on wounds (bark); in tuberculosis, influenza, menorrhagia, dysentery and hemoptysis (gum).

Catharanthus roseus

Diabetes and as a wasp sting antidote; for cancer (dried plant); to Hodgkin's disease, menorrhagia and diabetes (dried leaves); mixed with cow dung is used externally for cuts and wounds (pulp of nodes); diabetes, menorrhagia, leukemia and stomach-ache (whole plant); in menorrhagia and the juice for wasp-stings (leaf infusion).

Ceiba pentandra

To treat gonorrhea (leaves); to reduce fever and to invigorate (roots); used to promote urination, to treat gonorrhea, to reduce fever, and to treat diarrhea and asthma (bark); in gravels (decoction of plant); in syphilis (decoction of leaves); to treat asthma and coughs (juice of leaves); in fever, to promote libido, in dysentery, menorrhagia, and diabetes (plant exudate).

Celosia argentea

In blood diseases, mouth sores, diarrhea, cataracts and hypertension (seed); on scorpion sting (leaf paste); in blood- dysentery, spitting of blood, menorrhagia and as a parasiticide in trichomonas infection (flowers); in bloody stool, haemorrhoid bleeding, uterine bleeding, leucorrhoea (flower & seed)

Celtis australis

Colic and amenorrhea (fruit); in the treatment of amenorrhoea, heavy menstrual and intermenstrual bleeding and colic (leaves and fruit decoction); to astringe the mucous membranes in the treatment of diarrhoea, dysentery and peptic ulcers (decoction).

Convolvulus arvensis

In the treatment of fevers and wounds. A cold tea made from the leaves is laxative and is also used as a wash for spider bites or taken internally to reduce excessive menstrual flow.

Cornus chinensis

Used principally to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and unusually active secretions including copious sweating, excessive urine, spermatorrhoea and premature ejaculation (herb); for the treatment of arthritis, fever and a wide range of other ailments (fruit, without the seed)

Cornus officinalis

To reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and unusually active secretions including copious sweating, excessive urine, spermatorrhoea and premature ejaculation (herb); for the treatment of arthritis, fever and a wide range of other ailments (fruit); for allergy, backache, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, menorrhagia, nephrosis, night sweats, vertigo.

Cudrania tricuspidata

To treat sore or weak eyes (wood infusion); for malaria, debility and menorrhagia (inner bark, wood); to eliminate blood stasis and stimulate the circulation in cancer of the alimentary system, blood and lungs (plant)

Dalbergia sissoo

Eye diseases and gonorrhea (leaf); cholera, effective in bleeding piles, menorrhagia and in varicose veins (bark); in gonorrhoea (leaves decoction); in leprosy, boils and eruptions and to allay vomiting (wood).

Ficus benghalensis

For lumbago, rheumatism, external pains, sores and ulcers, soles of the feet when cracked or inflamed and toothache (latex); in diarrhea and dysentery (bark and young bud infusion); as a poultice in abscesses (heated leaves); in diabetes (bark); as a tonic (bark and seed); in vomiting, to scalp to grow hair long (paste) and for menorrhagia (root); in gonorrhoea (root-fibres); is good tonic, effective in diabetes, dysentery, gonorrhoea and in seminal weakness (infusion of bark).

Ficus glomerata

Bilious affections and bronchitis (leaves); in amenorrhea and haemoptysis (fruits). Tribal systems of medicine employ it for diabetes, dysentery, pulmonary diseases, boils, adenitis axillaris, epidydimitis, hydrocele, orchitis, muscular pain, scabies, menorrahgia, spermatorrhoea, piles, bronchitis, leprosy, urinary complaints, sinus, oedema, impurities of blood, thrombophlebitis, syncope, bile disorders and menstrual disorders.

Hibiscus rosasinensis

Checks bleeding, soothes irritated tissues and relaxes spasms, excessive and painful menstruation, cystitis, gonorrhea, feverish illnesses, bronchial catarrh, coughs, diabetes and to promote hair growth. The flowers are used in the treatment of carbuncles, mumps, fever and sores.

Ipomoea digitata

For emaciated juveniles, debility, increases secretion of milk, enlarged liver and spleen, increases weight, moderates menstrual discharge, poor digestion, TB (plant); liver and spleen maladies, enervation and excessive menstruation (powder); bronchitis and fever (decoction); for diseases of the spleen and liver, for menorrhagia, debility and fat accumulation (powdered root)

Limonia acidissima

For epilepsy, purgative and colic (leaves); it increases resistance to contagious diseases such as smallpox and pestilent fevers, and an antidote to various poisons (dried fruit); diarrhea, dysentery, hiccough, sore throat and diseases of the gums (unripe fruit); menorrhagia (spines).

Mucuna pruriens

To treat roundworm, sterility, difficult urination and emaciation (seed and root);useful in increasing sperm count, ovulation in women, etc.; in leucorrhoea, menorrhagia, spermatorrhoea, Parkinson's (seed); in facial paralysis and nervous disorders (root); purifies the blood, cures rheumatism, asthma, cough, stone in the bladder and improves vitality (root decoction). Leaf paste is applied to ulcers. This herb is being investigated as a possible remedy for AIDS.

Nelumbo nucifera

A decoction of the flowers is used in the treatment of premature ejaculation. A decoction of the floral receptacle is used in the treatment of abdominal cramps, bloody discharges etc. The flower stalk is haemostatic. It is used in treating bleeding gastric ulcers, excessive menstruation, post-partum haemorrhage. The stamens are used in treating urinary frequency, premature ejaculation, haemolysis, epistaxis and uterine bleeding. A decoction of the fruit is used in the treatment of agitation, fever, heart complaints etc. The seed is sedative. It is used in the treatment of poor digestion, enteritis, chronic diarrhoea, insomnia, palpitations etc. The plumule and radicle are used to treat thirst in high febrile disease, hypertension, insomnia and restlessness. The root is tonic. The root starch is used in the treatment of diarrhoea, dysentery and a paste is applied to ringworm and other skin ailments. It is also taken internally in the treatment of haemorrhages, excessive menstruation and nosebleeds. The root nodes are used in the treatment of nasal bleeding, haemoptysis, haematuria and functional bleeding of the uterus. The plant is a folk folk remedy for cancer, modern research has isolated certain compounds from the plant that show anticancer activity. Embryos are used for reducing fever, for treating cholera, haemoptysis, spematorrhoea and syphilis.

Phyllanthus amarus

Jaundice and liver diseases, diabetes, influenza, asthma, infections of the bronchial tubes, indigestion, colic, dropsy, as an astringent, diuretic and disorders of the urogenital system and kidney (plant). The whole plant is used to treat jaundice, chronic dysentery, dyspepsia, cough, asthma, indigestion, diabetes, urinary tract diseases, skin diseases, ulcer, sores and swelling. Whole plant is used in gonorrhoea, menorrhagia and other genital affections. It is also useful in dropsy, jaundice, diarrhoea, dysentery, intermittent fevers, ophthalmopathy, scabies, ulcers and wounds. Young shoots and leaves are given in dysentery and ulcers. Fresh root is an excellent remedy for jaundice. The decoction of the plant is a remedy for intermittent fevers and intermittents with infarcts of the spleen and liver.

Phyllanthus fraternus

Used in gastric complaints including dyspepsia, colic, diarrhoea and dysentery; also employed in dropsy and diseases of urino-genital system, in diabetes (plant); in dysentery (young shoots); for jaundice (fresh roots); as a refrigerant for scalp (leaves decoction); for application on oedematous swellings and ulcers (leaves, roots); to offensive sores and ulcers (latex).

Polygonatum biflorum

For all types of sores and skin injuries, to treat excessive menstruation, lung problems and digestive upsets (root); for piles, rheumatism and skin irritation.

Polygonum bistorta

In the treatment of internal and external bleeding, diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera, catarrh, cystitis, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcers, ulcerative colitis, excessive menstruation, pharyngitis, snake bite, stomatitis, vaginal discharge, anal fissure, spongy gums, mouth ulcers and sore throats.

Polygonum hydropiper

In treating diarrhoea, dyspepsia, itching skin, excessive menstrual bleeding, menstrual pains and haemorrhoids and as a sedative (plant); as a tonic (root).

Potentilla anserina

In chronic diarrhea, alleviating spasms, to stop excessive and painful flow of menses, for intestinal troubles, leucorrhoea, kidney stones, arthritis and cramps(plant); for inflamed gums.

Rubia cordifolia

To treat skin diseases, piles, diabetes, fracture, freckles, in rheumatism, leprosy, menorrhagia, abnormal uterine bleeding, internal and external haemorrhage, bronchitis, rheumatism, stones in the kidney, urinary bladder and gall bladder, dysentery etc. (root); antidote for scorpion stings and bites by cobras, in the treatment of blood disorders and spreading fever of kidneys and intestines (stem); spleen enlargement and liver problems (plant).

Salvia plebeia

As an anthelmintic, diuretic and astringent (plant); for alleviating spasms and as a tonic, in treating diarrhoea, gonorrhoea, menorrhagia and haemorrhoids (seed); relieving toothache pain (leaf).

Sesbania sesban

For menorrhagia, useful in checking diarrhoea and reducing enlargement of the spleen (seed); anthelmintic (leaves)

Symplocos crataegoides

In the treatment of menorrhagia, eye diseases, bowel complaints, dysentery, inflammations, vaginal discharges, leprosy and ulcers, as a gargle for giving firmness to spongy and bleeding gums; to sprains and muscular swellings (bark juice).

Symplocos racemosa

Diarrhoea and dysentery, liver complaints and dropsy, to stop bleeding of gums, it is used also in ophthalmia and conjunctivitis (bark). In combination with sugar it is recommended in the treatment of menorrhagia and other uterine disorders

Urtica dioica

Jaundice, kidney problems, bleeding of the uterus and nose, excessive menstruation, haemorrhoids, arthritis, rheumatism and eczema, as a diuretic (for relieving rheumatism and edema), astringent and as a substitute for thiazide treatment (without side effects) (plant); Externally, the plant is used to treat skin complaints, arthritic pain, gout, sciatica, neuralgia, haemorrhoids, dandruff etc.; as a tonic (flower and seed); for heart problems. Nettles have a long history of Use(s) in the home as a herbal remedy and nutritious addition to the diet. A tea made from the leaves has traditionally been used as a cleansing tonic and blood purifier so the plant is often used in the treatment of hay fever, arthritis, anaemia etc.

Vernonia cinerea

Useful for the purifying the blood, bile and semen, used as a specific for leucorrhoea, menorrhagia, and in the treatment of chronic skin diseases, dysuria, strangury, bladder stones, piles, worms and haematological disorders (plant); for the treatment of amoebiosis, humid herpes, eczema and ringworm and for the extraction of guinea worms, elephantiasis (leaf juice); to treat fevers, rheumatism and conjunctivitis (flowers); effective against roundworms and threadworms, leucoderma, psoriasis and other chronic skin diseases (seeds).

Vinca major

For treating haemorrhages, excessive menstruation, abnormal uterine bleeding, vaginal discharge, in cases of nose bleed, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers or sore throats and hardening of the arteries (plant)

Vitex agnus-castus

In malfunctions of the feminine reproductive system and has been used with great effect in restoring absent menstruation, regulating heavy periods, restoring fertility when this is caused by hormonal imbalance, relieving pre-menstrual tension and easing the change of the menopause; for the relief of paralysis, pains in the limbs, weakness etc (fresh berries).

Wedelia chinensis

In cough, cephalgia and diseases of the skin, especially alopecia (leaves); in uterine haemorrhage and menorrhagia (herb decoction); antihepatotoxic (leaf powder)

Woodfordia floribunda

For diarrhea, dysentery, fever, headache, hemorrhoids, herpes, internal hemorrhage, leukorrhea, liver disorders, menorrhagia, ulcers, wounds.

Woodfordia fruticosa

In sores, ulcers, problems with mucous membranes of the body, hemorrhages, seminal weakness, menorrhagia, as a tonic, stimulant (in pregnancy) and astringent (flower), bowel disorders (including dysentery) (plant and flower), to treat thirst, toothache, bleeding, anorexia, diarrhoea, dysentery, leucorrhoea, amenorrhoea and herpes.
