Miscarriage or spontaneous abortion is the loss of pregnancy, where the fetus cannot survive or is born before the 20th week of pregnancy. Any vaginal bleeding, other than spotting, during early pregnancy is considered a threatened miscarriage. Miscarriage is the commonest complication of pregnancy. The important factors which contribute to miscarriage are abnormal fetus, illnesses in mother (such as diabetes, severe high blood pressure, kidney disease, lupus, underactive or overactive thyroid gland, infections etc.), diseases and abnormalities of the internal female organs (abnormal womb, fibroids etc.) , certain drugs, alcohol abuse, cocaine and tobacco use etc. |
