Miscarriage or spontaneous abortion is the loss of pregnancy, where the fetus cannot survive or is born before the 20th week of pregnancy. Any vaginal bleeding, other than spotting, during early pregnancy is considered a threatened miscarriage. Miscarriage is the commonest complication of pregnancy. The important factors which contribute to miscarriage are abnormal fetus, illnesses in mother (such as diabetes, severe high blood pressure, kidney disease, lupus, underactive or overactive thyroid gland, infections etc.), diseases and abnormalities of the internal female organs (abnormal womb, fibroids etc.) , certain drugs, alcohol abuse, cocaine and tobacco use etc.

Boehmeria nivea	Used to prevent miscarriages and promote the drainage of pus (plant); in the treatment of fluxes and wounds (leaves); in the treatment of threatened abortions, colic of pregnancy, haemorrhoids, leukorrhoea, impetigo etc (root)
Dipsacus japonicus	In the treatment of rheumatoid arthralgia, traumatic injuries, backache and weak knees, seminal emissions, polyuria and also to secure abortions (root)
Scutellaria baicalensis	Calms the foetus in pregnant women, in the treatment of enteritis, dysentery, diarrhoea, jaundice, chronic hepatitis, urinary tract infections, hypertension, threatened miscarriage, nosebleed and haemorrhage from the lungs or bowel (root)
Viburnum prunifolium	To treat gynecological conditions, including menstrual cramps, to prevent miscarriages, aiding recovery after childbirth, in treating the effects of menopause, dysentery, haemorrhage of the uterus, prolapse of the uterus, morning sickness, convulsive disorders, colic and other cramping pains that affect the bile ducts, hysteria, asthma and palpitations of a nervous origin (decoction)
