Atrial Fibrillation and flutter are common heart rhythm disorders caused by a problem in the conduction of electrical impulses in the upper chambers, or atria, of the heart. These are very fast electrical discharge patterns that make the atria contract very rapidly, with some of the electrical impulses reaching the ventricles and causing them to contract faster and less efficiently than normal. Even though the ventricles beat more slowly than the atria, the ventricles often still beat too fast to fill completely. Therefore, the heart pumps inefficiently, blood pressure may fall, and heart failure may occur.
Should be taken under close scrutiny because of its toxic properties; for mainly heart disease but also palpitations, maladies of the kidney, wounds, burns, asthma, edema, fever, mental disorders, neuralgia and abdominal tumors. Used as myocardial stimulant in congested heart failure, auricular flutter and rapid auricular fibrillation.
Used for asthma, coughs, colds, bronchitis, sore throats, skin irritations; arrhythmia, associated with anxiety (with Hawthorn leaves) and as a sedative (with Lavender and Balm).
For restlessness and hyperactivity in juveniles (jatamansone); for convulsions and arrhythmia of the heart. It is a substitute for valerian, Valeriana officinalis, and used in the treatment of epilepsy, hysteria and convulsive affections, nervous indigestion, insomnia, depression and tension headaches. Externally, it is used as a deodorant and to treat rashes.
