Alcohol withdrawal syndrome refers to a group of symptoms that people have when they suddenly stop drinking after using alcohol for a long period of time. It is usually manifested by mild symptoms such as insomnia, disorientation, agitation, tachycardia, mild shakiness and sweats. But, if it is untreated, it can lead to severe confusion, delirium tremens, seizures, and even cardiovascular collapse. It occurs rarely in "occasional" drinkers too. People who have gone through withdrawal before are more likely to have withdrawal symptoms each time they quit drinking. Withdrawal symptoms typically occur within 6-48 hours after the last drink.
