Abelmoschus moschatus

Stomach disorders,hysteria and as an aphrodisiac (seed); venereal diseases and sexual disorders (in men).The roots, seeds, and sometimes leaves, are used in traditional Indian medicines for a variety of illnesses including intestinal complaints, constipation, dyspepsia, and gonorrhea (Oudhia, 2001a).Roots and leaves are cures for gonorrhea (Agharkar 1991). Even use against venomous reptiles has been reported (Lindley 1985). The poultice of leaves and roots are used for boils, cystitis, fever, headache, rheumatism and vericose vein.

Aloe vera

As a tonic, in amenorrhea, asthma, boils, bruises, burns (including those from radiation), stomach cancer, common cold, cough, digestive disorders, fever, hemorrhages, hysteria, inflammation, eye problems, jaundice, cirrhosis, hepatitis, stomach ulcers, colitis, wound, scald, dry skin, conjunctivitis, psoriasis, hair fall, rosacea, warts and eczema; prevents opportunistic infections in cases of HIV and AIDS.

Annona squamosa

Head lice removal (seed); for cancerous tumors (bruised leaves and salt combination), administered in acute dysentery and as a snuff to overcome hysteria (bruised leaves). Leaves made into a paste without adding water are applied to unhealthy ulcers and wounds. The leaf decoction is also employed in baths to alleviate rheumatic pain.

Anthemis cotula

To induce menstruation and was traditionally used to treat supposedly hysterical conditions related to the uterus, as a poultice on piles or to draw splinters out of the body, and can also be applied to the bath water (herb); rheumatism, epilepsy, asthma, colds and fevers (infusion); onto insect stings (leaves)

Artemisia vulgaris

Used to bring on delayed or suppressed menstrual cycle and helps to regulate menstrual cycles (plant); in the treatment of nervous and spasmodic affections, sterility, functional bleeding of the uterus, dysmenorrhoea, asthma and diseases of the brain (leaves and flowering tops); Used in Homeopathy to treat epilepsy, petit mal, hysteria, sleepwalking, dizziness and prolapsed uterus.

Benincasa hispida

Epilepsy (fruit juice); for intestinal worms (shelled seeds); dandruff (seed and peel); in periodic attacks of hysteria, peptic ulcers, coagulating blood, general debility, as a purifying agent, cancer, obesity, hemoptysis, used in the treatment of coughs, fevers, excessive thirst and tuberculosis; painful wounds (rind).

Carthamus tinctorius

Sores and pain related to rheumatism (seed oil); jaundice (flower); laxative (seed); boils, candida infections, dysmenorrhea, rashes, fever, gout, gynecopathy, lack of apetite, measles, tumors, as an antidote, an emmenagogue, in cases of hysteria, such as that associated with chlorosis; poultice used to ally inflammation of the womb after child birth (powdered seed).

Chenopodium vulvaria

In the treatment of hysteria and nervous troubles connected with women's ailments (leaves).

Cimicifuga racemosa

Bronchitis, cancer (tongue), children's ailments, chorea, chronic bronchitis, common cold, cough, cramps, diarrhea, dysmenorrhea, female ailments, fever, hysteria, itch, kidney ailments, malaise, malaria, nerves, orthopedic ailments, parturition.

Cinnamomum camphora

In indigestion (leaf); as a sedative (in hysteria), carminative, aphrodisiac, as a nervine depressant in chorea, epilepsy, convulsions and rheumatism, in urogenital disorders, pruritis and as an antidote (in strychnine poisoning) (essential plant oil). Camphor liniment is used for relief of pain in muscular rheumatism.

Citrus aurantium

In stomach problems and as a laxative (fruit); in the treatment of swollen legs, in bronchitis and as a tonic (leaves); in fever, inflammation, for eyes, skin and hands and internally is taken for dysentery, diarrhoea and rheumatism, nervous and hysterical cases (flowers); in gout and rheumatism (oil).

Cynodon dactylon

Hemorrhoids, dropsy, to stop bleeding from piles and syphilis (root), ophthalmia, cuts and wounds (plant juice); anasarca and dropsy (plant decoction); chronic diarrhoea, dysentery, hysteria, epilepsy and insanity; in the treatment of hysteria, epilepsy and insanity (leaf juice)

Datura metel

Ophthalmia (seed decoction); asthma (flower); swolen areas and in rheumatism (leaf); to treat fever, worms, cracks in feet, filaria, chronic coryza, rabies, alopecia, skin diseases, boils, pain in breast and insanity (root, fruit and leaves); in the treatment of epilepsy, hysteria, insanity, heart diseases, fever with catarrh, diarrhoea, skin diseases and asthma (plant).

Dioscorea dregeana

To treat cramps, epilepsy, hysteria, insanity, nervousness, scabies, sore, wound.

Ferula asafoetida

Nervine stimulant, digestive agent and a sedative,excellent for asthma, bronchitis, whooping-cough, hysteria,impotency, woman and children's ailments,gastroenteritis, for depressed circulation and intestinal function. For respiratory problems and as a circulatory stimulant, lowering blood pressure and thinning the blood.

Ferula foetida

In the treatment of hysteria, some nervous conditions, bronchitis, asthma and whooping cough

Humulus lupulus

As a sedative, in digestive maladies, in debility, indigestion, worms, nervous conditions and hair brittleness; to remedy swellings and hardness of the uterus (flower decoction); for boils, bruises, calculus, cancer, cramps, cough, cystitis, debility, delirium, diarrhea, dyspepsia, fever, fits, hysteria, inflammation, insomnia, jaundice, nerves, neuralgia, rheumatism, and worms ; for insomnia, stress and anxiety (dry female buds)

Indigofera tinctoria

Epilepsy, lumbago, asthma, leucoderma, hemorrhoids and enlargement of the liver and spleen (plant); in damage to the liver (alcohol extract from plant); convulsions in infants, hysteria, chorea and amenorrhea.

Laurus nobilis

In the treatment of hysteria, amenorrhoea, flatulent colic etc (fruits, leaves); to treat upper respiratory tract disorders and to ease arthritic aches and pains (leaves); to treat sprains, bruises etc (oil from fruit); used to treat anorexia, cancer, candida, colic, dandruff, earache, high Blood Pressure, hysteria, nervousness, rheumatism, uterosis.

Lawsonia inermis

As an emmenagogue, in aching joints, bee stings, boils, burns, candida, condyloma, dermatosis, fever, headache, herpes, hoarseness, hysteria, jaundice, leucorrhea, myalgia, ophthalmia, parturition, spermatorrhea rheumatism, skin irritation, sores, stomach. The leaves and seeds are used in the form of juice, decoction and powder to treat consumption, diabetes and intrinsic haemorrhage. Paste of the leaves are applied externally in case of skin diseases, fungal infections, cracks on feet. It is employed both internally and locally in jaundice, leprosy, smallpox, and affections of the skin. The fruit has emmenagogue properties. The bark is useful in treating jaundice and enlargement of spleen, calculous affection, as alterative and in skin diseases and leprosy. The leaves are useful in menorrhagia, leucorrhoea and are also applied externally in headache. A decoction of leaves are used as an astringent. The leaf juice mixed with water and sugar is given in spermatorrhoea. The leaves are prophylactic against skin diseases. It is also used for typhoid and haemorrhagic conditions.

Leonurus cardiaca

Mainly directed toward the elderly; as a cardiotonic (in mental disorders associated with the autonomic nervous system), in prostate disorders, menopause, hysteria, heart palpitation, amenorrhoea, general weakness after fever and goiter

Majorana hortensis

In colic (seed and leaf); bronchial complaints, tension headaches, insomnia, anxiety, minor digestive upsets, painful menstruation, in asthma, hysteria and paralysis (plant); an external application for sprains, bruises, stiff and paralytic limbs and toothache, and for hot fomentation in acute diarrhoea (oil)

Melaleuca leucadendron

In asthma (leaf); as a tonic (bark powder); for toothache, bronchitis, chronic laryngitis, colic, hysteria and as a liniment in rheumatism and gout (volatile oil).

Mentha piperita

Stomach problems (including colic), gall bladder pains, nausea and as a stimulant (plant); headache and local aches (leaf); diuretic, alleviating spasms and as an expectorant (during colds). The anti-spasmodic quality relieves pain arising in the alimentary canal. Due to its stimulating, stomachic and carminative properties, it is effective in treating certain forms of dyspepsia, flatulence and colic. Peppermint tea is used also for palpitation of the heart. In cases of hysteria and nervous disorders, an infusion of Peppermint is administered.

Mentha spicata

In hysteria, morning sickness and colic of infants (sweetened plant infusion); for bronchitis and fever (leaf).

Moringa oleifera

Used in paralytic conditions and intermittent fever; also useful as rubefacient in rheumatism, in spasmodic affections of the bowels, hysteria and flatulence as well as in epilepsy (roots); in diseases of liver and spleen, in tetanus and paralysis (fruit); in rheumatism (seed oil); in dental caries, otalgia and headache (gum).

Nardostachys grandiflora

Used in the treatment of epilepsy, hysteria and convulsive affections, nervous indigestion, insomnia, depression and tension headaches; heart disorders and as a stimulant (root). Externally, it is used as a deodorant and to treat rashes.

Nardostachys jatamansi

For restlessness and hyperactivity in juveniles (jatamansone); for convulsions and arrhythmia of the heart. It is a substitute for valerian, Valeriana officinalis, and used in the treatment of epilepsy, hysteria and convulsive affections, nervous indigestion, insomnia, depression and tension headaches. Externally, it is used as a deodorant and to treat rashes.

Nepeta cataria

In hysteria, amenorrhea, chlorosis and toothache, for colds, flus, fevers, infectious childhood diseases, to prevent miscarriage and premature birth as well as allays morning sickness (plant); in toothache (leaves)

Paeonia emodi

Problems with the nervous system, dropsy, biliousness, diseases of the uterus, colic, epilepsy, blood purifier for children, for cuts and sores (caused by maggots) (root); dysentery (cooked young shoots and leaves); hysteria, convulsions, colic, uterine diseases and obstructions of the bile duct (tubers); as a treatment for diarrhoea, cough, haemorrhoids and varicose veins (dried flowers).

Passiflora foetida

Fruit is emetic, decoction is used in biliousness and asthma. Leaves are applied on the head in giddiness and headache. Their decoction is reportedly used to treat asthma and biliousness. A decoction of the leaves or roots is said to be an emmenagogue and useful for treating hysteria.

Ruta graveolens

For colic, as an analgesic, in hysteria, giddiness, nervous headaches, palpitations and rheumatism (leaf); alleviating gall bladder stones, gallbladder pain and spasms, in amenorrhea and menopause (for hot flashes) (plant); as an emmenagogue, anthelmintic and in epilepsy (volatile oil); coughs, flatulence (flower infusion); alleviating pain.

Sapindus laurifolius

As a tonic, laxative, anthelmintic, in hysteria and asthma (fruit and root bark).

Tanacetum vulgare

Rheumatism, ulcers (chronic), for gout, as an abortifacient and vermifuge (essential flower and leaf oil); maladies of the liver, gall bladder and the bile duct, in treating strangury, kidney weaknesses, in dyspepsia, with troublesome flatulence, hysteria, jaundice, fevers (plant); to treat amenorrhoea and painful dysmenorrhoea and as an anthelmintic, especially for children (leaf infusion and whole plant);in diphtheria, acute inflammations of the throat, and in epidemic catarrh (spray or inhalation of plant decoction).

Tilia cordata

In maladies associated with chills (such as influenza and catarrh), in the treatment of colds and other ailments where sweating is desirable (flowers); in the treatment of indigestion, hypertension, hardening of the arteries, hysteria, nervous vomiting or palpitation (flower tea); gastric or dyspeptic disturbances, to burns or sore places (wood)

Valeriana jatamansi

Substitute for Valeriana dubia, also in eye, spleen and blood diseases, in fever (as a stimulant) and as an expectorant (root), anxiety and emotional disorders such as hysteria, painful menstruation and cramps, hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome etc. It encourages sleep, improve sleep quality and reduce blood pressure. Externally, it is used to treat eczema, ulcers and minor injuries.

Viburnum prunifolium

To treat gynecological conditions, including menstrual cramps, to prevent miscarriages, aiding recovery after childbirth, in treating the effects of menopause, dysentery, haemorrhage of the uterus, prolapse of the uterus, morning sickness, convulsive disorders, colic and other cramping pains that affect the bile ducts, hysteria, asthma and palpitations of a nervous origin (decoction)

Zizyphus jujuba

It aids weight gain, improves muscular strength and increases stamina. It is a tonic to strengthen liver function and increases immune-system resistance. It promotes the growth of hair. It is used to form a plaster in the treatment of strangury. It purifies blood and aid digestion. They are used internally in the treatment of chronic fatigue, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, anaemia, irritability and hysteria. It is used internally in the treatment of palpitations, insomnia, nervous exhaustion, night sweats and excessive perspiration. The root is used in the treatment of dyspepsia. A decoction of the root has been used in the treatment of fevers. The root is made into a powder and applied to old wounds and ulcers. The plant is a folk remedy for anaemia, hypertonia, nephritis and nervous diseases.

Zizyphus vulgaris

In fevers and dyspepsia (roots); externally applied to old wounds and ulcers (root powder); in the treatment of palpitations, insomnia, nervous exhaustion, night sweats and excessive perspiration (seeds); in the treatment of chronic fatigue, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, anaemia, irritability and hysteria (dried fruits).
