Abelmoschus esculentus

Gonorrhoea and problems with the urogenital system (mucilage of fruit); catarrh and throat problems (fruit capsule); as a poultice (leaf and fruit capsule); gonorrhea (roots and leaves);the immature capsules is demulcent, diuretic and emollient; the seeds are antispasmodic, cordial, stimulant and allay thirst, cure stomatitis, dyspepsia, urinary discharge,leucoderma and itch.

Abies amabilis

To treat stomach ailments, TB, haemorrhoids and various minor complaints (bark); to treat colds, sore throats, for burns, bruises, wounds and sores (resin)

Abies chinensis

In the treatment of kidney or bladder problems, and also makes a good enema for treating diarrhoea (inner bark or twigs); as a gargle or mouthwash for mouth and throat problems or externally to wash sores and ulcers (bark)

Abies grandis

As a wash for sore and infected eyes and as a gargle for sore throats (gum from bark); in the treatment of stomach problems and TB (root bark or stem); to ease rheumatism or to the chest to treat lung haemorrhages (poultice); in the treatment of colds (leaves)

Acacia chundra

For abscesses (leaf and stem bark)reduces tooth hypersensitivity, sponginess of gums, relieves sore throat, bleeding, ulceration of gums, leucoderma (bark and leaves).

Acacia farnesiana

For dysentery, dermatitis and other inflammations of the skin and raucous membranes (green pods); to relieve bronchial passages and for sore throats (dried gum). A tannin-rich extract has been prepared from the leaves and young shoots and used in decoction and applied to inflammed tissue and burns to promote rapid healing.

Acacia greggii

For conjunctivitis (pods); diarrhea and dysentery; superficial bleeding and can also be dusted into moist, chafed body folds and dusted on infants for diaper rash (powder); for the stomach and esophagus in nausea, vomiting, and hangovers (flowers and leaves); for sore throat and mouth inflammations as well as dry raspy coughing (root).

Acacia nilotica

In asthma (gum, bark and leaf); ophthalmia (and other eye problems) and “sexual weakness” (leaf decoction); diabetes, dysentery and diarrhea, bronchitis and skin maladies (bark); headache, urinary problems, sore throat and gonorrhea (leaf); as a toothbrush; Tender growing tops rubbed into a paste with sugar and water act as demulcent in coughs.

Acacia senegal

Inhibiting bleeding, inflammation of the intestinal area, as an emollient, in cough, burns, sore throat and as a vehicle for other medicines (for example. suspending insoluble powders) (gum); bark, leaves and gum are used to treat gastritic disorders,, haemorrhage, ophtalmia, colds, diarrhoea, gonorrhea, leprosy, typhoid, urinary tract infections and as emollient, antitussive and astringent ; the gum is considered an aphrodisiac. The flowers are relished by honeybees.

Acorus calamus

Asthma, bronchitis, for burns, cancer, catarrh, colds, cough, sore throat, colic, constipation, diarrhea, dysentery, indigestion, epilepsy, fever, flatulence, gangrene poisoning, headache, hemorrhages, nerve problems, odontosis and in parturition.

Actaea alba

In the treatment of coughs, colds, rheumatism and syphilis, to treat itchy skin and as a gargle for sore throats (root)

Adiantum pedatum

In the treatment of nasal congestion, asthma, sore throats etc (syrup); in the treatment of ague and fevers (whole plant)

Amaranthus blitum

In the treatment of ulcerated mouths and throats, externally as a wash for ulcers and sores, for young children, lactating mothers and for patients with fever, haemorrhage, anaemia or kidney complaints (plant); to relieve headaches (root juice); to treat inflammations, boils and abscesses (leaves)

Anacardium occidentale

For diarrhea, dysentery, colic, as an internal and external antiseptic against bacterial infections, for all kinds of stomach ulcers, for ear and eye infections and to stop bleeding and heal wounds. For calluses, corns, and warts, cancerous ulcers, and even elephantiasis (fruit bark juice and the nut oil); dysentery, fever, inappetence, leucoderma, piles, tumors, and obstinate ulcers (fruit); for sore throat (leaf decoction)

Ananas comosus

For cancer and tumors, coagulating blood, in edemas, third degree burns and promoting the absorption of drugs, to expel intestinal worms, as emmenagogue, as a drastic treatment for venereal diseases, as a gargle in cases of sore throat and as an antidote for seasickness.

Anemone canadensis

To treat pain in the lumbar region, as an eye wash to treat crossed eyes, twitches and eye poisoning, for headaches and dizziness, to clear the throat (root); to wounds, nosebleeds and sores and as a wash for eye sores (roots and leaves).

Angelica atropurpurea

In the treatment of colds, rheumatism etc (leaves); in the treatment of fevers, colds, flatulent colic and other stomach disorders, obstructed menses and as a general tonic for women, as a gargle for sore throats and mouths and as a poultice for broken bones, swellings etc (infusion)

Artemisia tridentata

In the treatment of digestive disorders and sore throats, to treat pneumonia, bad colds with coughing and bronchitis, for rheumatism, to relieve pain during child birthing (leaves); as a liniment on cuts, sores etc (crushed plant)

Asparagus racemosus

As a tonic, aphrodisiac, cooling agent and for stimulating the secretion and/or flow of milk (root); as a demulcent (plant); is useful in tumors, inflammations, diseases of blood and eye, throat complaints, tuberculosis, leprosy, epilepsy, night blindness and kidney troubles.

Balsamorhiza sagittata

For stomach pains, colds, whooping cough, TB, fevers and headaches (leaves, root and stem); to treat sore mouths and throats, toothaches, for body aches such as rheumatism, on wounds, blisters, bites, swellings and sores (root); for dysentery (seeds)

Baphicacanthus cusia

For ague in children, to kill dermatophytes causing `athletes foot' (leaf).A decoction of roots and leaves is used in the treatment of epidemic mumps, sore throat, erysipelas and fever-caused rashes.

Baptisia tinctoria

In the treatment of upper respiratory infections such as tonsillitis and pharyngitis, and is also valuable in treating infections of the chest, gastro-intestinal tract and skin (infusion); soothes sore or infected nipples and infected skin conditions (root); as a gargle to treat mouth ulcers, gum infections and sore throats (decoction of plant).

Berberis vulgaris

Diarrhea, dysentery, jaundice and skin diseases (root bark juice); sporadic fever (root bark decoction); throat and mouth irritation (fruit or root decoction); for strengthening the gums and relieving pyorrhea (fruit juice); stomach cancer and stomachache.

Butea monosperma

For dysentery, diarrhea, phthisis and bleeding within the bladder and stomach (gum); as a laxative (seed); in hemorrhoids and boils (leaf); as an anthelmintic, specially useful in the treatment of roundworms and tapeworms (seed oil); diabetes, gallbladder stone, sore throat and leucorrhea.

Cassia auriculata

Diabetes (seed); skin diseases (root); to treat sore throat, enemas, rheumatism and eye diseases (bark); to treat chronic purulent opthalmia and conjunctivitis, gout, gonorrhoea, dysentery, diabetes cough and asthma; to treat urinary disorders and diabetes (flowers).

Ceanothus americanus

To treat fevers and problems of the mucous membranes such as catarrh and sore throats (root, root bark); for asthma, bronchitis and coughs (root); in the treatment of bronchial complaints including asthma and whooping cough, dysentery, sore throats, tonsillitis, haemorrhoids etc (plant); for cancer and venereal sores (bark)

Cinchona officinalis

As a tonic in intermittent fevers, debility, leucorrhea, smallpox, rheumatism, etc.. in skin ulcers and gum problems (bark); sore throat (bark decoction or infusion)

Citrus limon

In fighting scurvy, inflammations, rheumatism, diarrhea, dysentery and reducing fever (juice); cleansing the eye (diluted juice). Lemons are an excellent preventative medicine and have a wide range of uses in the domestic medicine. Applied locally, the juice is a good astringent and is used as a gargle for sore throats etc. It is also a good antiperiodic and a substitute for quinine in treating malaria and other fevers.

Coleus amboinicus

As a poultice for scorpion, for renal calculi, chronic cough and asthma and centipede stings (leaf). Leaf infusion, decoction, or syrup is reported to be useful in cases of epilepsy, convulsions, asthma, bronchitis, chronic coughs, sore throat, and congestive heart failure.

Commiphora myrrha

Athlete's foot, bed sores, mouth sores, pyorrhea, throat ailments, ulcers, wounds, in perfumery, mouth washes, dentrifice.in vitiated conditions of vata, pitta and kapha, stomatitis, dyspepsia, helminthiasis, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoes and other menstrual disorders, bronchitis, asthma, phthisis, spongy gum, pharyngodynia, rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, inflammations, strangury and skin diseases.

Coptis trifolia

In the treatment of thrush in children, ulcerated mouths and as a gargle for sore throats or mouths (plant)

Crotalaria laburnifolia

As an antiinflammatory and for sore throat (plant); as gargle for sore throat or inflammations of the mouth (plant infusion)

Cydonia oblonga

For ulcers (stem bark); in the treatment of respiratory diseases, especially in children (seeds); as a mouthwash or gargle to treat mouth ulcers, gum problems and sore throats (fruit juice)

Cymbogon martini

Used for acne, sinusitis, sore throat, stimulating the immune system, bacterial and viral infections of the intestines, vaginitis, urethritis, nervous exhaustion, to warm, improve circulation, calm, reduce stress, to open sinus and breathing passages, uplift moods, to increase loving feelings and euphoria, improve mental clarity.

Daphne odora

In the treatment of backache, myalgia, skin diseases, poor vision etc (flowers, stem); for laryngitis and sore throats (leaves); for sore throat and caked breast (roots, leaves).

Descurainia sophia

To ease the pain of toothache, for chronic coughs, hoarseness and ulcerated sore throats, asthma (plant); asthma, fevers, bronchitis, oedema, dysentery, sciatica, on burns and sores (seed)

Diospyros virginiana

To treat bloody stools (boiled fruits); as a mouth rinse in the treatment of thrush and sore throats, for warts or cancers (inner bark)

Eucalyptus globulus

In rheumatism, asthma, spasmodic throat troubles, increases cardiac action, chronic bronchitis, skin diseases and for burns (essential oil of leaf and aerial part); in sporadic fevers (alcohol extract of bark and leaf); alleviating spasms (leaf); for relieving coughs and colds, sore throats and other infections (leaves essential oil); in the treatment of diarrhoea and bladder inflammation, externally it is applied to cuts etc (resin); in the form of a tincture in asthma and chronic bronchitis (dried leaves).

Ficus carica

In leucoderma (leaf); removing kidney stones (fruit); as a poultice (in boils) (roasted fruit); catarrhal affections of the nose and throat; as a poultice in the treatment of mouth sores, dental abscesses etc.

Glycyrrhiza glabra

In diabetes, epilepsy, as an antidote, tonic, depurifying agent, treating upper respiratory ailments (such as asthma, bronchitis, cough, hoarseness and sore throat), rheumatism, arthritis, for ulcers and inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract.

Hyssopus officinalis

In the treatment of flatulence, stomach-aches, upper respiratory tract infections, coughs in children etc (tea from leaves); in gargles for quinsy and ordinary sore throat.

Limonia acidissima

For epilepsy, purgative and colic (leaves); it increases resistance to contagious diseases such as smallpox and pestilent fevers, and an antidote to various poisons (dried fruit); diarrhea, dysentery, hiccough, sore throat and diseases of the gums (unripe fruit); menorrhagia (spines).

Marrubium vulgare

Used for asthma, coughs, colds, bronchitis, sore throats, skin irritations; arrhythmia, associated with anxiety (with Hawthorn leaves) and as a sedative (with Lavender and Balm).

Martynia annua

Scorpion sting (plant); and in epilepsy, and applied to tuberculous glands of the neck (leaf); for sore throat (juice); in inflammations (fruit); to the bites of venomous insects (Nut paste); on wounds (leaf paste); in itching and abscess (seed oil)

Mikania glomerata

Cough, bronchitis, throat inflammation, pleurisy, colds, flu, asthma, sore throats, laryngitis, and fever (Leaves); Neuralgia, rheumatic pain, eczema, pruritus and wounds (decoction of the leaves).

Morus alba

In indigestion, refrigerant in fever, dyspepsia, melancholia and sore throat (fruit); as an anthelmintic and astringent (root and leaf); as a gargle in inflammation of throat (leaf decoction); used for external use in bed sores (leaf paste with neem leaves).

Nepeta hindostana

Sore throat (decoction), reducing fever, antigonorrheic, syncope, anxiety and a cardiotonic for several heart problems, such as Angina pectoris (plant).

Nymphaea alba

In dysentery and irritable bowel syndrome, as an astringent and a narcotic (rhizome); for gastrointestinal disorders and jaundice; to treat bronchial catarrh and kidney pain and can be taken as a gargle for sore throats (root decoction); in the treatment of insomnia and anxiety (flower).

Persea americana

For dysentery (fruit skin); as a remedy for pyorrhea, on wounds, to relieve neuralgia, for diarrhea, sore throat and hemorrhage (leaves); to cure dandruff (seed powder); relieve toothache (seed); on skin eruptions (oil from seed)

Polygonum bistorta

In the treatment of internal and external bleeding, diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera, catarrh, cystitis, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcers, ulcerative colitis, excessive menstruation, pharyngitis, snake bite, stomatitis, vaginal discharge, anal fissure, spongy gums, mouth ulcers and sore throats.

Polypodium vulgare

For melancholia and also for rheumatic swelling of the joints (fresh roots); in jaundice, dropsy and scurvy, and combined with mallows removes hardness of the spleen, stitches in the side and colic. In the treatment of pleurisy, hives, sore throats and stomach aches and as a mild laxative for children (tea from roots).

Potentilla erecta

In the treatment of diarrhoea, dysentery, sore throats etc (plant); as a wash for mouth ulcers, infected gums, piles and inflamed eyes (decoction); to treat chapping of the anus and cracked nipples (extract)

Punica granatum

In dysentery and diarrhea (fruit rind and bark); as a vermifuge (root bark), as an injection in leucorrhoea, as a gargle in sore throat and in powder for intermittent fevers. It is used externally in the treatment of vaginal discharges, mouth sores and throat infections.

Rosmarinus officinalis

Healing wounds in rheumatism and stimulating the apetite; stimulating the cardiovascular system (5% tincture); as a gargle for sore-throat, in headache and in tardy menstruation (oil)

Rumex hastatus

In skin disease; in the treatment of bloody dysentery (plant juice); chewed to relieve aches in the throat (fresh tuber)

Sagittaria sagittifolia

Antidote for insect and snake bites, itch, foul sores, scrofulous ulcers, breast inflammation and sore throat (leaf); for gravel and lochia (tuber).

Salix alba

Pain relief, arthritis, calluses, convalescence, diarrhea, dysmenorrhea, fever, headache, malaria, pain, respiratory ailments, rheumatism, skin ailments, throat ailments, warts

Salvia officinalis

In upper respiratory tract inflammations, digestive disorders, as a tonic, in reducing fever, nausea, alleviating spasms, and in skin diseases and irregular menstruation; for the treatment of thrush and gingivitis (oil); as a gargle in the treatment of sore-throats (leaves)

Satureja hortensis

Ear maladies (leaf); used in menstrual suppression and flatulent colic, and is a stimulating tonic after fevers, to treat nausea, diarrhoea, bronchial congestion, sore throat.

Solanum stramonifolium

Asthma and rheumatism (root); sore throat (fruit).

Solanum surattense

Asthma and cough (root and plant); rheumatism (leaf); sore throat (fruit); as a carminative and in dropsy (plant), for relief in burning sensation in the feet accompanied by vesicular watery eruptions.

Solanum xanthocarpum

Cough, asthma, bronchitits, dropsy, leprosy, constipation, flatulence, sore throat, tonsilitis, gum diseases, snake bites, heart disease, chest pain, certain types of fever, muscular pains, gonorrhoea, dysuria, enlargement of the liver and spleen and stomach. Leaves are applied locally to relieve pain. The juice of berries is used in sore throat. Like roots, seeds are also administered as an expectorant in asthma and cough. The plant is credited with diuretic properties and is used to cure dropsy. Its juice is mixed with whey and ginger and given in fevers. The juice of the leaves, mixed with black pepper, is prescribed in rheumatism.

Spondias dulcis

Used to cool, to calm itchiness, to cure internal ulceration, as an antidote for poisoning, used to soothe sore throat and inflammation of the skin (fruits); as a drink which will expel the membrane enveloping the fetus in the womb (bark).

Sterculia urens

Throat problems (gum). Gum is cooling and is used for making sweetmeats; mucilage has no adhesive power. The gum exudate has laxative properties. Used to treat throat infection and in dental fixtures.

Strobilanthes cusia

For the treatment of ague (leaves); in the treatment of epidemic mumps, sore throat, erysipelas and fever-caused rashes (decoction of roots and leaves)

Syzygium aromaticum

As an analgesic and for sensitive teeth and cavities (of the teeth) (essential oil); indigestion, gastric irritation, alleviating nausea and in halitosis (bud); respiratory maladies, sore throat, headache and coryza, for removal of stain in teeth, as salivary stimulator in sublingual pharmaceutical compositions, for treating circulatory diseases such as posttraumatic oedema.

Tamarindus indica

As an astringent in bowel complaints, to weaken the action of resinous cathartics (pulp); in correcting bilious disorders, for rheumatism (plant); used in subacid infusions, and a decoction is said to destroy worms in children, and is also useful for jaundice, and externally as a wash for sore eyes and ulcers (leaves)In some forms of sore throat the fruit has been found of service; for asthma (bark).

Tamarix articulata

In stomatitis, sore throat, to foul sloughing ulcers, phagedenic, dysentery and diarrhea.

Terminalia chebula

Stomach problems, tooth decay, hemorrhoids, external wounds, ulcers, scalds, inflammation of the mouth mucosa, increases the secretion of gastric juices (fruit); in asthma, sore throat, vomiting, sore eyes, heart diseases, hiccups, indigestion, constipation etc.

Thymus vulgaris

The plant is used internally in the treatment of dry coughs, whooping cough, bronchitis, bronchial catarrh, cold, asthma, laryngitis, indigestion, gastritis and diarrhoea and enuresis in children. Externally, it is used in the treatment of tonsillitis, gum diseases, rheumatism, arthritis and fungal infections (Athlete's foot).The whole herb is used in the treatment of digestive disorders, sore throats, fevers etc.

Trachyspermum ammi

For sore throat, bronchitis, diarrhea, increasing the secretion of gastric juices, alleviating spasms and as a tonic (fruit); as a carminative (root and fruit); in flatulence, atonic dyspepsia and diarrhoea and cholera (plant); colds, coughs, influenza, asthma, diarrhoea, cholera, colic, indigestion, wind, oedema, arthritis and rheumatism.

Trema orientalis

Hematuria and diarrhea (root powder); pain associated with the musculature (bark); to treat coughs and sore throats (leaves)

Triticum aestivum

For cancers, corns, tumors, warts, and whitlow (seeds); biliousness and intoxication (young stems); malaise, sore throat, thirst, abdominal coldness and spasmic pain, constipation and cough (seed sprout)

Vaccinium vitis-idaea

In urinary tract infections; in the treatment of gonorrhoea, arthritis, rheumatism, diabetes and diarrhoea (leaves); for diarrhoea and as a treatment for sore throats, coughs and colds (mature fruits); as a gargle in treatment for sore throats (juice of the plant).

Vateria indica

Used for the treatment of several diseases, such as throat troubles, chronic bronchitis, piles, diarrhoea, rheumatism, tubercular glands, boils, etc. It forms a good emollient for plasters and ointment bases. Bark is orally administered to prevent vomiting.

Vinca major

For treating haemorrhages, excessive menstruation, abnormal uterine bleeding, vaginal discharge, in cases of nose bleed, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers or sore throats and hardening of the arteries (plant)

Viola odorata

For abdominal pain (oil); in asthma, bronchitis, sore throat and malaria (plant); as an emetic (root and seed); in kidney stones, as a diaphoretic, expectorant, antipyretic and diuretic; also used as a laxative (flower, root and seed). Violet flowers possess slightly laxative properties. Syrup of Violets is also employed as a laxative, and as a coloring agent and flavouring in other neutral or acid medicines. The flowers have undoubted expectorant qualities. The fresh flowers are also added to salads; have a laxative effect.
