Useful herbs

Acalypha indica

For cough (leaf extract); bronchitis and pneumonia (plant decoction); skin diseases (leaf); as a vermifuge, in constipation and rheumatism; in asthma, cough, bronchitis and earache (fruit) .

Aesculus assamica

For ear problems (leaf decoction); in fever, fish poisoning (leaf and bark).

Anthemis tinctoria

As a poultice on piles and can also be applied to the bath water and onto insect stings (leaves); in earaches and deafness (seed oil); stimulates menstrual flow (plant).

Aphanamixis polystachya

Used to treat splenomegaly, liver disorders, tumor, gastric ulcer, dyspepsia, intestinal worms, skin diseases, leprosy, diabetes, opthalmopathy, jaundice, haemorrhoids. Seeds are laxative, anodyne and anthelmintic; Used to treat ulcers, ophthalmopathy, otopathy, myalgia, skin diseases.

Bambusa arundinacea

It is used for stomach and respiratory disorders, menstrual disorders, intestinal worms, wounds, nausea, vomiting, piles, in cough, consumption, asthma and fever. In combination with other astringent medicines it is given in chronic dysentery and internal hemorrhages. The most efficacious application for dislodgement of worms in ulcers is a poultice made by pounding the young shoots of the bamboo. The decoction of the joints is supposed to have an action on the uterus, and is used by females after delivery to cause free flow of the lochial discharge. The same part of the plant pounded with water is applied to inflamed joints. The juice of the flower is dropped in the ear for earache, and in deafness. An ointment from the root is a folk remedy for cirrhosis and hard tumors, especially tumors of the abdomen, liver, spleen and stomach.

Citrus medica

In kidney stones, vomiting, as a laxative and anthelmintic (root); as a tonic and stimulant (fruit), to treat tastelessness due to fever, intrinsic haemorrhage, anaemia, jaundice, hiccough, asthma, vomiting, pain in cardiac region, colic, pox, calculus and gravels, dental caries, for easy delivery, foul smell in flatus, erysipelas, headache, anorexia during pregnancy and earache.

Crateva religiosa

Used to promote digestion, to relieve headache, stomachache, and dysentery and also applied externally for earache (leaves); to empty the bowels (liquid from the bark).

Crinum defixum

Boils, earache and skin diseases (leaf); as a laxative (seed); urinary problems, burns, witlow, abdominal disorders, bodyache and carbuncle (bulb).

Crinum zeylanicum

Used in rheumatism (bulb); externally applied to injuries and ulcers (leaves); for relieving earache (leaf juice).

Dendrophthoe falcata

As an abortifacient (stem); brain tonic and in skin diseases (plant); menstrual problems, wounds and asthma (bark); is used to treat wounds, as emmenagogue and as a remedy for consumption, asthma and mania. The lukewarm leaf juice is used as an eardrop to cure earache.

Dipteracanthus prostratus

Dipteryx odorata

To bathe fevered patients (bark); used for snakebites, cuts, contusions, coughs, asthma, mouth sores, rheumatism and as a shampoo in hair loss (seeds); for earaches and ear infections (seed oil)

Erythrina variegata

As an antidote (bark and flower), for dispersing venereal buboes and for relieving pain in joints, for the relief of ear-ache and as anodyne in tooth-ache (leaf).

Euphorbia resinifera

For bronchosis, cancer, catarrh, conjunctivosis, constipation, dermatosis, diarrhea, dropsy, dysmenorrhea, epistaxis, gout, headache, otosis, plantar wart, respirosis, sore, ulcer.

Euphorbia tirucalli

In cancer (plant). The local medicinal practices employ its parts for dealing with body pain, eczema, scabies, rheumatism, earache, oedema, deranged phlegm, epistaxis, deranged bile, constipation and dyscrasia.

Iris kumaonensis

Antidote for opium addiction and for reducing fever (leaf and root); in the treatment of colic pain due to intestinal worms, hot and cold disorders of the stomach and intestines, and pain below the neck and shoulders (seeds);in tinnitus, pain in the ears and weakening of the eyesight (flowers).

Kalanchoe pinnata

Boils, wounds, swellings and insect bites. For all types of pain and inflammation. For earaches (leaf juice dropped into ear); for upper respiratory infections, flu, and fever.

Laurus nobilis

In the treatment of hysteria, amenorrhoea, flatulent colic etc (fruits, leaves); to treat upper respiratory tract disorders and to ease arthritic aches and pains (leaves); to treat sprains, bruises etc (oil from fruit); used to treat anorexia, cancer, candida, colic, dandruff, earache, high Blood Pressure, hysteria, nervousness, rheumatism, uterosis.

Mollugo pentaphylla

For eye sores, as an antiseptic and stimulating the secretion of gastric juices; promotes digestion; also promotes menses and suppressed lochia (leaves); to relieve sore legs (poultice); applied to relieve earache (oil).

Pandanus fascicularis

In syphilis, leprosy, smallpox and leucoderma (leaf); earache and diseases of the blood (anther). Its leaves are known for their aromatic, bitter and pungent properties and are used in leprosy, leucoderma, scabies, small pox and syphilis. Besides, an oil obtained from its bracts is administered in headache and rheumatism.

Physalis minima

Gonorrhea, as a tonic, diuretic and laxative (fruit). The juice of the leaves is used as a remedy for earache.

Portulaca oleracea

For maladies of the ear, spleen, kidney and liver, anitgonorrheic and purifying blood (plant); burns, diabetes, diarrhea, dysentery, indigestion, hypotension, insomnia, ophthalmia, heart palpitations, scurvy, skin ailments (plant); in preventing heart attacks and strengthening the immune system, applied to burns (leaves); in the treatment of strangury, coughs, sores etc and are particularly effective in the treatment of skin diseases and insect stings (plant juice); to earaches, to alleviate insect stings (leaf juice); in dyspepsia, worm troubles and opacities of the cornea (seed).

Satureja hortensis

Ear maladies (leaf); used in menstrual suppression and flatulent colic, and is a stimulating tonic after fevers, to treat nausea, diarrhoea, bronchial congestion, sore throat.

Shorea robusta

The resin obtained from the plant is considered as astringent and detergent and is used in dysentery and for fumigating the rooms of sicks. Its resin with honey or sugar is given in dysentery and bleeding piles. This is also given in gonorrhoea and for weak digestion. Its bark decoction is used as drops in ear problems. Besides, its fruits are also used in diarrhoea.

Solanum nigrum

Hemorrhoids, liver problems (including cirrhosis), as an emollient, eye-diseases, rat poisoning, skin diseases, oedema, cough, urticarial patches, for achieving conception and to relieve from difficult labour and as a rejuvinative(plant); used externally ease pain and abate inflammation, and are applied to burns and ulcers (fresh leaves); for ringworm, gout and earache, and mixed with vinegar, is said to be good as a gargle and mouthwash (leaf juice); used externally as a poultice, wash etc in the treatment of cancerous sores, boils, leucoderma and wounds (leaves, stem and root); as an analgesic for toothaches (fruit juice).

Viscum album

In hypertension (without any reported side effects), ear maladies especially in earache-tearing pains in the ears, and otitis, bleeding in the uterus, as a sedative and emetic (aerial part and leaf); for spleen enlargement and tumors, to lower blood pressure, heart rate, ease anxiety and promote sleep, also relieve panic attacks and headaches, and improves the ability to concentrate (plant); as a cardiotonic (fruit, leaf, wood and bark).

Zanthoxylum armatum

In eye and ear diseases, headache, leucoderma and in spleen - enlargement; in dental problems, scabies, dyspepsia and fevers (fruits); in fever and dyspepsia (seeds); in toothache (stems with thorns); in cholera (bark infusion).
