General Info

Description

It is a glabrous shrub about 1.5 to 3.0 m high with flutted hollow stems. Leaves are 3 to 4 nate or opposite, narrowly lanceolate and subentire. The flowers are white in terminal and elongate panicles. The bracts are linear or linear-lanceolate. Calyx is campanulate, cleft half way into 5 ovate segements. Corolla is glabrous and white and corolla-tube is drooping. The drupes are dark blue and about 1.25 cm long, which are seated on the reddish accrescent calyx. The seeds are oblong.

Anthelmintic, tonic and vermifuge (leaf); anti-inflammatory and inhibits lipid peroxidation of cell membranes (Kumar)

Chemistry

Active Ingredients

Triacetylhispidulin, hispidium, and scutellarein glucuronide (leaf).

Pharmacology

Medicinal Use

Asthma, cough and scrofula (root bark); eliminating intestinal worms (leaf). Leaf juice mixed with butterfat is applied externally to herpetic eruptions and pemphigus. Its resin is employed in syphilitic rheumatism.
