General Info

Description

Slender climber, with 20-23 cm x 1.2-2.5 cm, linear, ensiform leaflets, and brown, sub-globose to globose fruits. Leaves are pinnate, alternately arranged at regular intervals along the stem, 60-80 cm long, consisting of linear-lanceolate segments, 15-30 cm long, armed with two ranks of spines on upper face. Its sheath and thin petiole are armed with whitish spines, whose function is that of support and climbing organs. Flowers, unisexual on dioecious plants, are clustered in showy unbranched inflorescences, enveloped by spiny spathes

Anticancer and alleviates spasms (aerial part); as a contraceptive by the hill tribes of Kerala (juice of the ripe fruit, and stone); vermifuge (wood)

An alkaloid (leaf); a flavonoid (root); a saponin (stem).

Pharmacology

Medicinal Use

For cramps and convulsions, in abdominal tumours (plant); in diseases of the blood, and in biliousness (tender leaves); used in chronic fever, dysentery, biliousness, and also as a tonic (root decoction)
