General Info

Description

A massive climber up to 20m long. Stem scrambling by the sharp, recurved prickles; main stems are 10–15cm in diameter and young stems are spiny, 4–8mm in diameter, and fissured longitudinally. Leaves are spiral, exstipulate, and 3-foliolate. Petioles are 2.5–4cm long. Folioles are glossy, very dark green above, 6cm × 2.5cm – 7.3cm × 3cm – 6.5cm × 3cm – 7cm × 3cm – 6cm × 2.1cm, gland-dotted, with intramarginal nerves and several pairs of secondary nerves. Flowers are yellow with a gray gynaecium. Fruits are 7mm × 1cm.

Pharmacology

Medicinal Use

Used to treat diarrhea, to invigorate and to relieve the exhaustion of malarial fever (roots); to promote digestion and to treat lung troubles (leaves); to treat rheumatism and intestinal troubles (fruits).
