An evergreen tree of small or moderate size with pendulous branches, sometimes attaining a height of 21 m. and a girth up to 1.5 m. Bark white, soft, spongy, peeling off in elongated papery flakes; leaves oblong-elliptic, gland-dotted; flowers small, creamy white, in more or less interrupted elongate spikes; capsules small, globular or hemispheric, woody; seeds numerous, obovoid or cuneate, very small.

Alleviates spasms and antiprotozoal (aerial part); repels mosquitos, expectorant, carminative and anthelmintic (primarily against roundworms) (volatile oil); antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and antidandruff.

Cineole, a-terpineol and the esters of L-a-pinene and L-limonene also contains sesquiterpenes, sesquiterpene alcohols, azulene, dipentene, valeraldehyde and benzaldehyde (volatile oil of leaf and aerial part); betulin, friedelin, epitaraxeryl acetate.

In asthma (leaf); as a tonic (bark powder); for toothache, bronchitis, chronic laryngitis, colic, hysteria and as a liniment in rheumatism and gout (volatile oil).
