A tonic is a substance that exerts a gentle strengthening effect on the body, designed to restore enfeebled function and to promote vigor and a sense of well-being. Tonics help to restore and strengthen individual organs and the entire system.

Boerhavia erecta

Aphrodisiac, diuretic, stomachic, cardiotonic, hepatoprotective, laxative, anthelmintic, febrifuge, expectorant and, in higher doses, as an emetic and purgative (root)

Boerhavia repens

Diuretic, stomachic, cardiotonic, hepatoprotective, laxative, anthelmintic, febrifuge, expectorant and, in higher doses, as an emetic and purgative (root); aphrodisiac (root decoction); emetic, diuretic and laxative (decoctions of the roots and leaves); as a mild laxative and febrifuge (infusion of whole plant); abortifacient and ecbolic (infusion of leaves)

Borassus flabellifer

Cooling, diuretic, stimulant, antiphlegmatic, laxative (sap); cooling, restorative, diuretic and anthelmintic (root)

Bowiea volubilis

Cardiotonic, emetic, irritant, laxative, rodenticide

Brassica juncea

As an aperient and tonic, the volatile oil is used as a counterirritant and stimulant. Antirheumatic and stimulates pancreatic secretions and the gastric mucosa (seed); hypoglycaemic specifically through an increase in the concentration of hepatic glycogen and glycogenesis.

Brassica oleracea

Antidiabetic, cardiotonic, stomachic, antifungal, antiulcerative, antiasthmatic and alleviates symptoms of rheumatism (leaf); increaseses secretion of gastric juices (leaf and seed); antihelmintic, diuretic, laxative and stomachic (seeds).

Brunfelsia americana

Astringent and tonic (fruit).

Buchanania lanzan

Anticancer and stimulates respiration and the cardiovascular system (aerial part); as a tonic (seed); aphrodisiac (kernels)

Butea monosperma

Antifertility (flower and seed); anthelmintic and laxative (seed); astringent (gum); stops secretions and hemostatic, bitter, pungent, emmenagogue, alliterative,tonic, diuretic, aphrodisiac.

Caesalpinia nuga

Emetic (decoction from the crushed seeds); diuretic (roots); uterine tonic (powdered leaves).

Calendula officinalis

Organic extract causes a reduction of reverse transcriptase activity accounting for its anti-HIV action (Kalvatchev), antiprotozoal and antispamodic (plant); antibacterial (essential oil and flower); reduces fever, diaphoretic, antiemetic and carminative; stimulant, bitter, tonic, sudorific, febrifuge, carminative, anti-emetic and anthelmintic (florets).

Callicarpa arborea

Carminative, aromatic, bitter, tonic (bark); diuretic (aerial part).

Calotropis gigantea

Antiarrhythmic and alleviates spasms (root); anticancer (root and leaf); hypotensive (latex); laxative (plant juice); digestive, stomachic and tonic(flower); emetic, diaphoretic, alternative and purgative (root- bark and juice).

Calotropis procera

Camellia sinensis

Cardiotonic, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant and astringent (leaves).

Campsis grandiflora

Blood tonic, carminative, depurative diuretic and febrifuge (flowers and whole plant)

Cannabis sativa

Anodyne, anthelmintic, demulcent, diuretic, emollient, emmenagogue, febrifuge, laxative, narcotic and tonic (seed). It is a pain-killer, sleep-inducer and used to relieve some of the unpleasant side effects suffered by people undergoing chemotherapy. Stimulates the secretion of gastric juices (flower); induces sleep, aphrodisiac, on the cardiovascular and central nervous systems, depresses respiration, analgesic, entheogenic, induces euphoria, hypnotic, intoxicant, narcotic, alleviates spasms.

Canscora decussata

Antitubercular (flower tops and root) and anticonvulsant (plant); nervine and alterative tonic.

Canscora diffusa

Tonic, laxative, an alternative, and a nerve tonic (whole plant).

Capparis micrantha

Antitussive (root and seed); uterotonic (decoction of the root)
